Default For sale: 1869 National Chronicle Newspaper w/loads of baseball content

Posted By: Brian C.

The National Chronicle (1869-1870) was an early sports newspaper and the continuation of The New England Base Ballist (1868). This issue, from November 1869, has terrific baseball content. It includes a special feature of the details and box scores from “old games” of “which [Atlantic] members now famed, first made their appearance”: Atlantic v. Baltic (1856), Atlantic v. Liberty (1858), Atlantic v. Eckford (1862), Atlantic v. Gotham (1865), Atlantic v. Active (1865), Atlantic v. Harvard (1866), and Atlantic v. Peconic (1869), with profiles of which notable Atlantic players did what. Then there’s a section on unsuccessful efforts for the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings to play the Atlantics in a championship match. Other baseball content includes a discussion of the annual meetings of the New York, New Jersey, and District of Columbia clubs, and a list of names and addresses of baseball teams from all over the country (including Atlantic of San Francisco). The newspaper is in great shape for its age, and has its original string binding. It's hard to believe that it came out just four years after the Civil War. $195.00.
