Great card of a great fighter — but he wasn't from Portland.

"Mysterious" Billy Smith, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame this past June, was a Canadian from Little River, Nova Scotia, and won the first officially recognized world welterweight championship on April 17, 1893. Towards the end of his career he moved to the West Coast, opening a hotel and Turkish bath in Yakima, Washington, and then a saloon in Portland, where he died on Oct. 15, 1937.
