From everything I’ve read, it seems to me like it was someone who knew the victim - a friend, a relative, repair man, etc.
Why would the thieve(s) enter through a second story window? Why not a first story window? Wouldn’t it have been a lot easier, and a lot less conspicuous (propping a ladder up against the side of the house) to enter from the first floor? The only answer that comes to mind is that the thieve(s)
knew the second story wasn’t wired.
