one other scenario I didn't want to rule out is the photography that was used. High res scans and then using the right lighting can make a big difference too. It's pretty easy to lighten it up to hide creases and scruff marks.
If cards get soaked and cleaned, is there a chance that creases or marks may re appear in time, even though it got holderd?
