Default Collecting the 1939-40 Cincinnati Reds ...

Posted By: Chris Counts

FKW's recent post about two uncatalogued Reds cards (standard card-sized b&w photos with fascimile autographs) got me thinking ... is there another pre-war team that is better represented by a variety of sets than the pennant-winning 1939-40 Cincinnati Reds? No doubt several tobacco era teams are in the running as well, although I can't imagine another team from the early gum era that's better-represented. In addition to FKW's new cards, I can come up with the following sets ...

1) 1938-39 / PC786-1 / Orcajo Photo Art postcards

2) 1938-39 / PC786-2 / Metropolitan Clothing Co. postcards

3) 1938-39 / PC786-3 / Val Decker Meat Packing Co. postcards

4) 1938-39 / W711-1 / color cards

5) 1940 / W711-2 / b&w cards

Are there any I missed? I've also seen a postcard featuring Frank McCormick and Johnny Vandermeer. I believe it was produced by a company called Husky Foods ...

Many of the same pictures were used in these different sets. I recently picked up a half dozen original negatives from this era, and the images look like outtakes from these sets ...

The Reds of this era were also well-represented by Play Balls, Goudeys, exhibits and Wheaties ...
