The individual baseball, football and golf (and boxing to a lesser degree) stamps do have value. They are worth more (obviously) as complete panels.

The keys to the set:
Fopotball-Nagurski, Thorpe, and Grange & Nevers
Golfers-Hagen,Sarazen
Baseball-Johnson, and several other HOFers
Other-Buster Crabbe(Flash Gordon), and several boxers

As Leon said several of the lesser known sports can be had for $5-10 each but the major sports cards are worth more than Rich indicates in his post.
