I really like your practice of pretending. I have found that to be a very effective method for acquiring cards. and I completely agree with you on the liquidation strategy. What good is having money and time tied up in a hobby that you don't enjoy (i.e. cards you never look at anymore)?

I would think that if your core collection were 268 cards, then if you were to pick a narrower goal of a Nifty 50, then that would be one killer set of 50, with the sales of 218 cards available to fund upgrades for the reamining cards!
Also, don't fret...there;s no one that says you can't have a Nifty 268!
