I almost always ignore them. In fact, I can't remember a banner on any other site that I actually did click on or take notice of. Go for it, it won't bother me, or effect me in any way - postive or negative. I imagine a lot of people are like me. Just as long as it is not disturbing, like strobing lights or pop-ups.
