John Kalafarski In the movie, a newspaper headline is seen to list Ted and Joe as the RBI leaders. Ted wanted to be known as the best hitter who ever lived; Roy wanted to be known as the best ever. Ted was Redford's idol and he wore #9 in the movie and copied his swing.
The homer off the light tower was supposed to be based on a Ted homer (this I read in one of the many baseball books I've had the pleasure to read).
