Default The N29 and N43 Allen & Ginter Sets

A recent post on BST got me thinking about the unusual nature of the N29 and N43 sets. As vintage collectors know, the N29 set of 50 cards, issued by Allen & Ginter around 1889, features six baseball players as well as 44 other athletes from a variety of sports. And the N43 set, which offers a much larger card with a horizontal image, consists of the same exact 50 players with exactly the same poses. Only the format changes, with an ornate design placed around the player's image.

So how unusual is it for the same company to issue the same exact set in two different formats? Was the N43 considered a deluxe set? Was the size of the card enlarged merely to fit the contours of the tobacco pack? It just seems odd to me, and I can't recall another issue that is duplicated in this manner.
