Who originally acquired the ball? It seems that an 80 year old ball that's been in the family that long would likely have been discussed with family members about how and when it was signed. The best "confirmation" you could get would be this knowledge. Without it we're left with at best a guesstimate of when it's from. Also these "been in the family for X years" have been said about numerous fakes. I'm not saying that your item is a fake but I am saying that anyone who had a ball signed by Lou Gehrig for that long in your family would have likely remember or noted the date it was signed (especially if it was significant). I'd post pictures to get a better idea of what the community here thinks. We have a great group of members and we would be happy to offer our opinions on it.
