I also think the confusion of when it was issued, which Beckett listing it as a 48-49 card, drew collectors to it over a 49 Bowman which some incorrectly believed was issued a year later. The Bond Bread card is a black and white card, which are not popular with collectors, a regional, not a rookie card, and was unknown to a large portion of the hobby when collectors started persuing rookie cards. The Leaf became very popular in the 80s and that popularity continues today.
