In early Topps and Bowmans in the early 1980's. When gold and silver exploded, so did the then "vintage" card market. The 1952 Topps Mantle went from about $500 at the beginning of 1979 to $3K in early 1980 right back to $500 by the fall of 1982. Then these cards stayed stable or slightly upwards until a response to black monday in 1987 helped trigger a major explosion in Topps/Bowman.
