Hey, your enlarged pic actually points out more clearly what I was trying to say. The most important feature to examine is the dark section of his left sock. If you follow the straight line of the seat bottom, you'll see it dips down and is curved (which is actually his dark sock crossing in front of it). That's because his lower leg is 'pointed' toward the back of his chair (and presumably resting on the cross bar). The guy directly behind him has white pants and shoes on. Those are easily distinguishable from the player in question's leg/shoe and they intersect just a tad. (The other players in back don't come into play.)

Pic 2: Dark part of sock colored red.
Pic 3: Dark part of sock colored red, and corresponding parts of shoes, socks and whatnot are indicated.

I think the main reason for the dilemma here is the dirt, scuffs, etc., to the right of his left hand and arm. That shadowing distorts the fact his knee is up, pointing out towards the viewer.
