The sales taxes are a way in which Canada can have universal medical care, without paying through the nose directly (although we have continually debate how to fix our system, so not everything is perfect). In BC it's $47 per month for health care. In BC, the income tax rate is equivalent to the federal/California rate, so I suspect I can live through the situation in which I use money that is designed so I can actually distinguish the different denominations. Besides, the Queen and John A. MacDonald are both prettier than George (although at least John A. drank a heck of a lot more).
