What are the chances that doing that - not specifically with Piazza, but with any celebrity, either through the mail or in person - will result in the person saying "yes, I signed it" whether or not he really did?
My thinking is that people on this level sign so many autographs that they're not going to remember a specific item unless it's an extremely unusual piece, so some of them might say "yes" just to be nice, whether or not they really did sign it.
Here's a
video of the wrestler John Cena signing 3,000 photos. He might remember signing the photos as a whole, but I doubt if someone came up to him with "a" photo from that session he'd remember signing that specific one.
