My thinking is that people on this level sign so many autographs that they're not going to remember a specific item unless it's an extremely unusual piece, so some of them might say "yes" just to be nice, whether or not they really did sign it.
Here's a video of the wrestler John Cena signing 3,000 photos. He might remember signing the photos as a whole, but I doubt if someone came up to him with "a" photo from that session he'd remember signing that specific one.

The chances are about as good as finding someone who remembers him playing for the Marlins. It's a longshot.
