Not selling, but just thought I'd update your list. The Jack Goodman card has been long checklisted, but nobody has ever been able to produce one, and the background design of the image indicates it was not added to the set until the white border expanded release of 50 cards. It almost certainly does not actually exist. Mike Donovan of To-Day was found as the 25th card when it appeared on eBay in 2006. I see it is missing on this list. Donovan and James J. Corbett are extreme rarities.

Thank you for your reply! And thank you for reminding me of that, I'd sort of forgotten those rarities. Certainly makes me feel better as to why I did not finish this set at the time. I only recently realized a Jackson and Moore had sold this past week. I've never seen a Corbett for sale myself

I think it's been several years since a Corbett cropped up for sale. Last 1 I need to complete this gorgeous set. I've seen more Corbett's than Donovan's, but with how tough they are that may not mean much. The 23 basic cards come up but it sure feels like it can take a long time when you're looking for one specific card! Are you doing the white border set or the Tolstoi backs too?

Some of the silvers are very common for the set, I myself have 3 choynski and I see him pop up for sale all the time. I finished the white border set a few years back in common backs, I have not yet dabbled into tolstoi, they seem to be pretty uncommon (eBay atleast)

Oddly enough, Choynski is one of the ones I have the fewest of, only 5 in my box. Different ones seem to be more or less common during certain times, but I've seen a roughly equal number of all 23 'regular' cards over the last ~20 years. I think Frayne is the one I have the most of, Dempsey the least (as he sells high, not because he's tough I think). I thought Coburn was tough for awhile, but they all seem to balance out in time

I've found Tolstoi to be pretty tough, if still cheap and easier than the T218 Tolstoi's. I've been stuck at 45/50 for awhile now. Good luck on your finishing your silvers!

Donovan and Corbett are just brutal. I got the first Donovan on eBay many years ago but never could manage to win a Corbett. Good luck with the set. You’re gonna need it.

I was the buyer, the card is now cracked from it's slab and residing happily with my set, awaiting a Corbett to finish.

I remember the feeling of dismay when the Donovan was discovered. I have my base 23, probably all I'll ever have. One buyer bought all my doubles at Chantilly this summer.

I don't know, a PSA 4 is only worth $30 according to SMR

Well since there are no PSA 4 Corbett cards, why not have a fake price to go with a non-existent card?

Have either of you ever come across this variation of silver? Admittedly I've only handled about 40 or so but they are always a very silvery silver and this is pretty matte.

I know what you mean. It doesn’t show up well in a scan, but some have a more shimmery/vibrant look and others a much duller, matte or scuffed look. I don’t think there is an actual variation or that American Lithography changed the process, it’s just how cards have aged/storage conditions. Going through my box of them, the majority of ‘matte’ silvers are in the lower grade cards, I think largely from something rubbing on it over the years.

You can also find cards that appear to have received a double coat of the silver-color application. They are much, much darker and fairly obvious in hand. I have not noticed this with T42/T43/T80/T205 etc with any regularity.

Cards with the silver misaligned a bit will show a tannish color printed ink border beneath the silver. Under magnification, you can see a little bit of it on most cards.

No variation, just aging. Look at T205 baseball. They can vary from pretty shiny to very dull. I once had some from a find and was surprised how vibrant the tone of the border was. I suspect the same of T220s.

Highly recommend the boxing book that Adam has published for a number of years. Not only have I learned a ton about boxing cards but it's a tremendous cross-over reference for baseball cards as well. Learned about the Donovan rarity when it was featured on the cover of one of his books. See attached Donovan / Corbett / Coburn Proof (blank back, no print on front)

Very nice! I always wondered what had happened to that particular Donovan card after I missed the BIN on eBay many years ago by a few seconds. A full 25 card set is quite impressive! If you ever feel like parting with that Coburn blank back, I'd love to make an offer

Default Silver Update

Hey Fellas....

sent off my nice silvers to SGC. the worst one came back a 5 and the best cards came back "A" I guess maybe they thought they were short, but wouldnt that mean a TRM designation? oh well waste of $20 each. I hate grading...

nice to look at anyway, will look nice upon my office shelf :-)

group.jpg

I still need a few more, have some dupes to swap if anyone wants to explore a swap.

need:

Coburn
Jas. J. Corbett
Donovan
Jackson
McCoy

TTYL!
