It's DIAMOND STARS time.....so show us your pretty Art Deco gems

The Art Deco style of the 1934 - 1936 DIAMOND STARS cards always fascinated me. I favor the horizontal images in this set. I broke up my 108-card set some years ago,
and if I recall correctly there are only 8 horizontal cards in it. These cards are Frisch, Gehringer, Grace, Lopez, Ostermueller, Riggs, Trosky, Urbanski.
The first 96 cards are relatively easy to find. The 12 high #s (#97 - 108) are very difficult to find. These 12 cards are repeated from earlier subjects.
DIAMOND STARS cards are seldom seen on Net54. So, how about displaying some of your's.

Super job on the Stan Hack card! I always liked that he is in two of my favorite sets from different eras: Diamond Stars and Wilson Franks.

Some horizontals (it took me about ten tries to figure out how to arrange them on the scanner).

Carl Hubbell was an amazing southpaw pitcher, who pitched a very effective screwball. He is best remembered for his performance
in the 1934 All-Star Game when he struck out 5 future Hall of Famers: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Joe Cronin
in succession.
Carl's record of 24 consecutive Wins has yet to be broken.

My first vintage card ever, and still my favorite, is the Greenberg. Here it is in the two versions. Also really like the Mungo, Traynor, and the Bartell. Still need a few high numbers to finish the set.

Another great aspect of some Diamond Stars cards is that they tell a story, in my opinion more so than any other vintage card set featuring artwork.

Here is a great story card depicting Hal Trosky at bat with all the appropriate baseball action behind him.

I love the Diamond Stars as well and have 83 of the 108 cards = 76% complete set. I only have one high number the last card in the set #108 Walter Berger.

I am working on a PSA/SGC hybrid set and am about halfway there. I've posted some PSA cards so here are some SGC ones.

I love this set and have been working on it for a few years. Currently at 94/96 and 98/108 and really getting down to the nitty-gritty. Here are the obligatory Grove and a few we haven't seen yet.

Love the pics I’m seeing. In my mind this is the second best set of the 1930s behind only 1933 Goudey. Lack of Ruth/Gehrig doesn’t bother me at all.

Something that might be of interest to casual collectors who haven’t studied the set in detail. Along with the stat/bio updates on the backs of cards repeated from one year to another, there are six players who have “front” variations.

The first five simply reflect players who changed teams from one year to the next. The final one is not a true variation since the card numbers differ: low number 1935 Berger #25 vs high number 1936 Berger #108. Here “Braves” is removed to reflect the renaming of the team as the Bees.

Being a front guy, it is nice reading/seeing all the front variations for the Diamond Stars in your post...gives us 'fronties' something to shoot for.

Love this thread. Wanted to complete a pre-war framing project and had to decide on a set quartet to do it. Settled on Diamond Stars out of sheer beauty. Did Ott, Hornsby, Greenberg and Grove. Glad I’m not the only one sucked in by these cool cards. Will try to post pics later.

Wonderful...... we now have posted 70 different DIAMOND STARS subjects of the 96 featured in this set. Let's see if we can complete the set with the
remaining 26 to go. And, by all means, display the Hi#s (#97 - 108). So far, just 5 of them have been posted.

Furthermore, if we really want to go "crazy", we could include all the possible 1934 - 1936 variations and complete a Master set of approx. 174 cards.

Oswald L. "Ossie" Bluege. Third baseman for the Washington Senators in 1922-1939. 1,751 hits and 43 home runs in 18 MLB seasons. 1935 All-Star. 1924 World Series champion. He played his entire career in Washington. He was best known for his defense, but his best season at the plate was 1928 as he posted a .364 OBP with 78 runs scored and 75 RBI's in 588 plate appearances. He managed the Washington Senators in 1943-1947.

William Clifton "Cliff" Bolton. Catcher for the Washington Senators in 1931, 1933-1936, and 1941. 280 hits and 6 home runs over 7 MLB Seasons. His best season was 1935 as he posted a .399 OBP with 55 RBI's in 435 plate appearances.

Took some cards out of my display case to add to the fun. Here is what I consider the greatest “Big Three” in baseball history. Teammates who played for the same team their entire careers. Mel Ott, 1926-47; Carl Hubbell, 1928-43; and Bill Terry, 1923-36. That’s 52 seasons with NYG including the nine years from 1928-36 when all three played at the same time.

"Red" Rolfe was a member of the renown Yankees team referred to as the "Bronx Bombers" during the late 1930's which included Lou Gehrig,
Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing.

Two pitchers in the 1935 release, Blanton and Whitehead, are largely forgotten names to most fans, but they kicked off their rookie seasons in Fernandomania-like fashion.

Cy Blanton, first ten games: 9 starts, 9 CG, 1.00 ERA
John Whitehead, first eight games: 8-0 W-L, 8 CG

I suspect it was their hot starts that earned them slots in the set among the 60 new players added to the checklist that year.

I find it interesting that my two least favorite cards in the Diamond Stars set, Cuyler and Rogell (due to their awkward artwork compared to rest of the cards), are two of the six cards remaining. Here is Delancey, which meets the typical Diamond Stars high standard of just plain interesting design.

There's a fun similarity between the DS Frisch and the Goudey Hornsby, particularly with the two players having been traded for each other.

Great set! Someone early on asked about wrappers.

To my knowledge, there are 8 different Diamond Star wrappers. They can ben seen on the Old Cardboard wrapper page:

There are rumors about other number combinations on the wrappers but in all these years of collecting wrappers, I have never seen a real or Xerox copy of another wrapper combo.

The Photo Art Prints and Etched Wonder photos advertise the R311 Glossy and Leather cards.
