Does anyone have a legitimate brown old mill reverse?; if so, would you please post with a black old mill reverse for comparison.

Have there been any recorded sales of a Brown Old Mill reverse? I'm curious what kind of premium they have brought if ever.

I have never had success with the search function here, but scans of blacks and browns have been posted at least a couple of times before.

Hello JimB,

I seem to recall seeing scans here as well, and did do a PPS prior to posting.

Here's one that I could find using the search function:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1126903002/

One important detail about the search function is using the "match option instead of date. It's not perfect but it helps some.

Another good note about the search feature is changing from "message" to "thread" view. You can do that by simply altering the word message int he URL yourself, like this:

New: http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/thread/1126903002/
Original: http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1126903002/

See the difference?

By default the search returns results as messages, but I personally like to view entire threads on the subject I am searching for.

Enjoy

The card pictured below is not mine, however, it clearly shows a very real and very brown (not a faded black) Old Mill back.

I think all of the Brown Old Mills are hand-cut. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.) The last time I saw a legitimate one on eBay was 2004. The subject was Revelle and the card did not sell. The starting bid was in the thousands.

Hi Dave,
I'll post some scans when I have a chance.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the scans,nice pickup.

Hi Scot,
You are correct; all of the "real" Brown Old Mills I have seen were hand cut including the Revelle which I used to own. I purchased the card in one of Lipset's auctions (November,2004)I think, along with an entire set of 48 Southern Leaguers. I traded the card about 6 months after the auction, so I can't give you a price, but doubt you can buy one for less than $2500.00.

I will try to add more later. Be well Brian

Brian or anyone who might know,
Does anybody know if all of the brown Lenox examples were handcut as well? Is there a checklist of these? Are there more than one known of any of them?

Jim,

The only Brown Lenox example I've seen in person was not hand cut.

Hi Jim,
All of the Brown Old Mill's I have seen,(5 or 6) and all of the one's I have been told about,(another 3) were all hand cut. I would guess that there are less tha 20 in existence, but I don't have a list. I will go back thru my catalogs, but I think Lipset had a lot of 5-6 of these back in the 90's.

Be well Brian

Hi Robert,
Brown Lenox are totally different, as they were factory cut, and I believe inserted into packs by accident. Or the printers ran out of black ink and used the plentiful brown ink used for the names to complete a print run, thinking no one would notice. Either way, Brown Lenox and Brown Old Mills are apples and oranges.
Be well Brian

Hi Brian,

Jim was asking those questions about the brown lenox.

We've kind of weaved back and forth a bit from old mill to lenox.

Thanks for the info.

Robert

Hi Rob,
Thanks for helping me answer Jim's original question. I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to "hang around the board" and read all of the post. Not to mention adding in a few Seinfeld references for Barry.....

Be well Brian

PS Barry, I love to use commas, semi colons, and periods in my post, just to make you cringe a little.......Summer of George....
