Default D304 Chase, possible fake?!

Posted By: Marty Ogelvie

I was bidding on this rare D304 Hal Chase but was concerned about the authenticity so I didn't bid strong. From the lack of bids, (auction ended at ~50) perhaps it is a fake. If so, What is the clear cut sign this is fake..? http://tinyurl.com/6dpun5

One more thing, What is the black line across the bottom border??

Marty.

Definitely fake. There's been a couple of threads in the past on these fakes and how to spot them.
Unfortunately there's a lot of reprints and at least two different kinds of reprints for this set. One is obvious in that it's much smaller than the real card and it says reprint (but is often scratched off).

D304s are rarely off center (especially only on the back)
The backs of the Brunners and Fleischman cards are dark green, not black.
The other 3 backs should be black.
Many of these reprints look like the corners have been artificially rounded and the colors aren't as vibrant as the real issue.

The black line means that Chase was traded and G.B. decided to use the card, but black out the name instead of make a new card for him.

Rob

Of course Robert is correct. Very poor looking fake....I still have one I bought a long time ago, and was offered a refund of my $40 (at the time these were about $60-$80...) but just kept it....when in hand most of them have a fakish shiny look too....

Speaking of shiny, almost everything else this seller has is of the 2007 Topps shiny variety. Another fairly good warning sign.

Thanks Robert.. you should send that description into the SCD.. they noted that there were many fakes in the market but left it at that.. which doesn't help the novice that much.
