proof vs production

I finally found a decent "collector grade" (that's not a devisive term JimB ) white cap Matty to go with the no name one. When studying them I found the many subtle differences interesting. Does anyone else have a comparo they can show? It's sort of neat, in a nerdy kind of way, to look for the inconsistencies....best regards |

I have seen many other things but didn't even notice that one. I swear the more you look at the two the more subtle differences you can see. I really am hoping someone else can show another set. I know there are many more proofs out there....regards |

On the proof he's got an "all business" type of look on his face and on the eventual card he appears to have that "damn I'm good" kind of half smile. |

I count three stripes on the cap of one, only one stripe on the other...there are several differences. |

I also didn't notice that difference. The ones I see are more on the uniform and his actual hair cut....which are quite different. |

The nose looks different too. I love that proof, but the "mid-grade" example doesn't suck either. |

In another life I could have easily ended up as one of those characters- I'm a little like silent Bob. |

Very interesting, Leon. The purpose of a proof was for the printers/artists to look at a test print and see what needed to be added, removed, enhanced, fixed, etc. As noted by others, yours show a few distinct changes-- including the height of the green and the stripe on the cap. |

I stared at the proof in person for hours and hours, and noticed the the image on the proof is so much sharper than the regular white cap. The other major differences as mentioned above are the height of the green background, the hatch marks, the stripes on the caps, and the shading. Great cards, Leon! |

There appears to be a little more clarity and sharpness to the proof, and a little less to the production copy...did the image lose something when it was mass produced? |

like the game I played as a kid in the HIGHLIGHTS magazine. notice the extra LINES in the cap. I have no proofs myself but would love to grab a few some day.

My daughters still get Highlights and Goofus & Gallant is still running, bless their little message-filled panels. |

There is also a difference in the number of wrinkles in his shirt & pants between the two cards. |

In the released card he seems to be wearing something under his left sleeve, close to the wrist, where a watch might be. No such highlight appears in the proof. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a watch, but if it's genuine, and not just a brushed-out printers's or photographer's error, what could it be? |

He seems to be looking more over his shoulder in the proof than the actual card. His face also looks a little different to me in the proof. Very cool. |
