Red Grange Spalding
Posted By: Carl Lamendola
I picked this up 10 years ago from an oldtime collector who stopped collecting in the 1970's. Sport Company of America solicited all the big names to get their permission on the card. They sent a few samples. Apparently, some big names like Red Grange and Ty Cobb (See the BMW offering on Ebay) never gave permission. If they signed up they were given 500 samples. This would make this his "rookie" card, I beleive. Notwithstanding the Shotwell sets. I do have a few other Grange's from the same era, but its difficult to pin a date on them. I believe this card was issued in 1925. |

Carl, I wonder how many blank backed promo Spaldings are still in existence? And what the approx. value would be on your card? |

In the estate auction of baseball HOFer Harry Hooper was an uncut sheet of the cards. The auction said he had been given the sheet for appearing in the set. |

I believe this was inserted in the box with the Red Grange Western Wilson Football "at very moderate prices, $5.00, $3.50, $2.00" |

There is a second exhibit from the movie and it is an on-field in-action shot. I hope it is a nonsports card so SGC will slab mine for five bucks! |

I have the same issue with the 1963 Fleer Football inserts - Goofy Gags. I guess SGC would consider them a non-sports issue? |

The set had subjects from a variety of sports. There is a Harry Wills boxing example on my site (item #64): |
