Default March REA Auction

Sorry if already posted, but I just looked at the offerings in the REA March auction for the first time. It appears to be 95% pre war baseball, with an extremely healthy dose of T206 (around 350 lots). Should be a popular auction around here!

3 Michael Jordan cards and a Garbage Pail Kids card in the first 10 lots. The hobby sure is changing. I did place bids on several Prewar lots.

Yup, word usage has become very strange in this country.
An Encore comes after the main act, a secondary small offering to gain further praise from the audience.

Then again, this is the land of lucking out being good fortune instead of lucking in....so, there's that.

So then this is a prelude! 350 t206 seems mighty large for a prelude. Perhaps we call this a preface?

Funnily enough, in most English speaking countries the 'Entree' is the precursor small serving of food prior to the 'Main' course.

Yet somehow the term Entree has found it's way to be known as the main course in the USA, so for mine this offering from REA is indeed the Entree to it's Main offering coming in April.

They should have called it a fluffer. Something to excite you for the big event.

I am really curious to see how the market handles this influx of supply. I have participated in all of the big auctions in the last 6 months or so, but I have not seen the amount supply coming online now. this is my first year witnessing the spring auction surge, and it is pretty amazing to see all the great cards available.

I know everyone jokes about a bubble, but some of the things I have seen most recently tell me we might be topping out, at least on some of the key cards I collect. I am not a believer in a crash or anything like that, but i see a lot cards moving up on razor thin demand. Ive been the #2 in a field of 2 a few times, which gives a good view of the inside market. In any market that can be a toppy sign.

Good observation. Sell into strength, as prices move up you will see a lot of older collections being released to the market to meet demand, once that demand is met prices will settle back a bit. A good time to re-calibrate your collection.

makes sense... but I am definitely a buyer, not a seller. just looking to break the cycle of every sale being 20% higher than the next, when there was literally ONE buyer paying that last price. a lot of smoke, a lot of mirrors in this high priced air.

I just looked to see if there was any autographed cards and they have a Harold Baines autographed Hall of fame plaque card. Seriously that's one of autographed consignment they got in. It's at a whopping 10.00 right now.

Gee, I haven't been scrutinizing all the recent auctions, but have been taking a quick glance looking for certain cards. Been sort of looking for mid-grade T206 Major HOFers (PSA 5, 6 Cobb, Matty, Johnson & Young) - been darn slim pick'ins - almost none I can see. A lot of lower grade stuff - plenty of 1-4 grades, but seems the better stuff isn't hitting the market. People appear to be keeping their stash, not letting go yet.

So, tough to get a good handle on current prices. Don't really know as of yet what the current market is for these T206 mid grade HOFers. Bottom line, can't justify any moves until get better feel for prices.

Have you seen recent sales of these cards? How are they doing?

Where these no-catalog monthlies show promise: It is a really useful way to tap into the consignors who may have a dozen $50-$100 cards that they want to sell but not at the price of giving a dealer a wholesale lot. It is a huge win for the bidders and smaller consignors. The ones who are screwed are the guys who basically live on busting up AH mass lots of slabbed cards.

Goldin has some 5-6’s available. Not my favorite AH though.

Looking at some of the prices in REA this month, they might need PWCC to run the auctions, don’t seem as “exuberant”, though there is time left....

Nothing like the $2mm that Tom Brady 1-of-150 is at in Lelands already!!!

It's also a loss for the auction houses that were already using this very model...

Wonder if more frequent auctions of lower quality material doesn’t have the net effect of diluting an AH’s reputation, but I’m sure this is something company’s have considered.

I imagine their marquee auctions will remain impressive, but I'm sure they were turning down lots of good material with only three auctions a year so these "lesser" sales are a viable solution. Isn't heritage doing a monthly now as well? Thought saw that somewhere.

Heritage has started a series of "Showcase" auctions to fit in between the catalog auctions and the lesser value Sunday night auctions.

The March auction ends tonight, not as large as the catalog auctions but many high value items.

Anyone see the PSA 4 Cobb Bat Off in REA's latest? How does PSA give that card a gift 4 with a big crease running through the middle of the card. Must have been graded during PSA's "Happy Hour". Nothing like consistency...

Here's one for the Blowout guys to go on a deep dive. Fun auction. This was my only win. Had some bids on the Pollard Goudey's. Real nice cards. Not enough beer in the keg for me to win the 34 Gehrig. Maybe next time. Y'all get anything?

Almost: $4440 for an SGC 1.5.

Eddie Collins 4 $1140

Johnson portrait SGC 1.5 $3360

It really is the big names. Prices on run of the mill T206 HOFers were mostly run of the mill.

Congrats. I may have taken a Goudey from you. Won two, including the Hornsby 119. That card has been a real challenge for me to find in nice condition, and they always seem to go for much more than you’d think by looking at vcp max. Guess it was my turn to overpay

EDIT: A big part of this card's premium must be the yellow background. Of the 21 cards I still need (from players not named Ruth, Gehrig, or Lajoie), 7 have yellow backgrounds. In news to probably none of you, clean yellow backgrounds are tough to come by. Part of my ongoing Goudey education.

I am happy with this. I agree Cobb seemed very strong. So did that red Goudey Ruth.

$7,800 for a PSA 2 Bat off is an impressive price.

How much should pricing on T206 Cobb's trail '33 Goudey Ruth's? I know they most likely won't surpass them. But what kind of gap should we expect?

It really is the big names. Prices on run of the mill T206 HOFers were mostly run of the mill.
That PSA 2.5 Johnson portrait looked absolutely gorgeous...makes me wonder if something was hidden by the scan, because I don't understand what made that a 2.5.

Default Costello

Picked up Famous and Barr Dashing Dan Costello to check a box on obscure NYAL. He had 2 PH appearances in 1913 and I have never seen a uni image. Felt like I went way too high on this but...

Ruth prices have definitely increased. I picked up this 1935 Goudey Ruth 5A back to finish my master set. Another SGC 5 that I missed out on went for about half the price back in November.

Default T206 Shag

Finally got my Shaughnessy. Given the market for these, I’m shocked I got it for under $500. Yeah, it’s a 1.5 but it presents nicely in the context of my collection.

Happy with this pickup and price, while a bit high I actually like the writing on the back. Tried for several others with the same "position" written on the back, but came up short on the others. Looking forward to the next one!

Sure, rub it in, Scott. If only you had told me back then that prices would go this crazy, I would have bid higher in your auction.

Agreed, and I disagree with Adam's comment re T206 HOFers going for run of the mill prices. There were many mid-tier HOFers who had crazy prices compared to historic - Evers, Keeler, Tinker, Chance, Brown, Joss, Jennings, Bender, Waddell, Walsh. It seems that currently, even the lesser HOFers are worth about $100/grade-number, with only a few exceptions (e.g., Huggins, Griffith, Wallace)

That was a nice Keeler, had a cup of coffee early with him but bowed out when it was down to a couple guys who had to have it.

Careful...or you might get me started on the metric system. Just another simple thing the US has made much more difficult.

Well, let's just look at the T206 results:

Chance red portait $240
Chance yellow portrait $240
Evers Chi $216
Tinker hands on knees $216
Wallace portait $84, $54
McGraw hip $216
McGraw sweater $228
Bresnahan port $144
Breshahan bat $108, $66
Huggins mouth $204
Huggins portrait $114, $192
Jennings portrait $216
Crawford throw $228
Crawford bat $240
Marquard thighs $204, $108
Marquard port $270
Bender no trees $132
Bender trees $168
Bender port $216, $270
Beckley port $204
Baker $204 (twice) $216

Even Matty: a dark cap 1 sold for $540

I am not saying that prices were weak or bad, just that they were average for average cards. Don't get me wrong, I hope that my T206 collection continues to appreciate wildly; daddy needs a retirement plan. Just that the noise over some spectacular prices on some superstars does not translate to spectacular prices on everything.
