1971 Series 5 and 6 Uncut
I've recently started a project which is going to bump against the interested in slit layouts and SPs, etc.
2 things with the 1971s: We have both slits for series 6 - 4 rows x3 and 6 rows x2. Do we consider the x2s to be short prints or do we look at the x3s as 1.3x prints? Do we have any images of either series 5 slit? With 121 cards in the series (including the extra checklist), there must be 11 cards per slit that are DPs if not 22 cards that are Quad prints. It actually just struck me that the sheets could look very much like the sheets from the 726 card sets of 1978-1981, with 11 DPd on each slit. Thoughts? 1971 Topps Series 5
1st two images are what I have. The 3rd image is of an OPC sheet which has a different layout than the Topps slits.

1971 Topps series 5
What I see is 9 rows 2x each, with 2 rows 3x each.
So, 11 different rows of 11 cards (121 different), with 24 total rows (264 cards) per sheet. Hope that helps. |

Pretty cool how all the action shots are in the first 3 columns.

Going back to one of the reasons I started this particular conversation -
On a "perfect' 132 card slit (264 full sheet), there'd be 12 different rows (each card printed exactly 2 times when you consider both slits). Now, take the series 5 slits here - all rows are 2x except for the Ryan and Otis rows. We wouldn't say the remaining 9 rows were 'short prints' - we'd say the Ryan and Otis cards were 'over printed' or some such (1.3x?) Now with the Series 6 slits - of the 10 different rows, 4 are printed three times and 6 are printed twice. Yet, we refer to these as SPs. Because 2x is the majority on these slits, wouldn't it be better to consider the 3x rows 'over prints' - the effect is the same in that there are less of the so-called "SPs" out there, but I think it would be more accurate. I know this is bucking decades of hobby terminology, but can the majority of cards in a series being considered SPs? Last edited by deweyinthehall; 03-01-2024 at 03:17 PM. |

1971 series 5 & 6
If you want to discuss years of poor terminology, please remember that every series 1 from 1958 thru 1969 had 110 cards (some years were 1 to 110; others were 1-109 with an extra copy of checklist 1). So, checklist 1 would be printed 4x (albeit most had subtle variations), 44 cards cards in the print run were printed 3x, and 65 cards were printed 2x.
Every series 1 during those years used a similar print pattern (4 rows 3x, 6 rows 2x) and yet SPs are not considered (i.e, labeled) in those years except in rare circumstances (e.g., 1966 Mantle is called a DP). Moreover, as many of us who read this forum have found out, some cards long considered as SPs truly were not. |

Is the 66 Mantle really a double print? I have a 66 sheet and he only appears once on it.

1966 Topps Mantle DP Series 1
Series 1 has 110 cards, so there are 4 rows printed 3x and 6 rows printed 2x. Mantle is on a 3x printed row.

I have the bottom sheet pictured. Was unaware another series 1 sheet existed with Mantle on it twice. Thanks for clarifying. Scott
