Default August Pick Ups

A modest pick up and hit the PO Box today...inspired by posts from net54 I got my first 1954 Red Heart card...this set will be a nice addition to my 54 Topps and Bowman sets. I've never owned or seen one in person...super cool cards.

Let the chase begin...

So...whatcha all got in August??

Picked this up in Chicago-one of four grails I never thought I'd get. The other three are: 1955 Topps Baseball Stamps, 1966 Topps Baseball Punchboard and 1970 Cloth Baseball. Never say never!

Nice. Ernie is one of the few '67 stars I haven't crossed off yet - which is kinda bad considering I'm a Cubs fan!

Wow Dave, that is a rare issue. You were lucky to find one of those. Great pick-up.

Picked up some 1951 Bowman Dodgers at the National. Working on team set. Ditto 1934-36 Diamond Stars.

It's the reverse (yes, a 1963!):

Default August Pick Ups

LCS pickup. Not without it’s issues, but finally found one with surface print clean enough to suit my tastes. Normally the black background is beset by more noticeable print snow.

I landed a big fish (for me at least). Finally found a mid-grade example, centered well enough:

I was happy to grab this pretty nice (and one of the keys to the 1972 Topps set) Rod Carew high number. Since I already have a sweet PSA 9 OC, this one is available for trade to anyone under the duress of trying to complete that tough, monstrous set...

I had at least 3 of those before finding one that didn't have near egregious tilt problems. It’s liberated now, but I think it was a straight PSA 7.

Some awesome cards already this month!

I remember back in the day this Rod Carew, his In Action card, and the Steve Garvey were cards of mythical proportion...we thought they didn't exist. When completing my 72 set years later this, and his IA card were last. Don't think I've seen a prettier one than this!

This beauty arrived today. I've been buying less of late with prices up, before finally figuring that if you're going to "overpay", it might as well be on something iconic you'll likely never sell anyway.

Found a 79 Topps set with a centered Ozzie card, a little rough but works for me as it is more centered than many I come across.

Time to focus on finishing my 72 set now.

BST pickup. It has been a little while; however, I'm getting back to working on this set.

(Yes, I realize posting this has the proverbial "knife to a gun fight" air about it. Awesome cards, everyone.)

I don't recall ever seeing a '56 Podres before. Love when that happens. That's a very, very cool card!!

Was psyched to grab up my second 1971 Topps Greatest Moments Tim McCarver (the other is a PSA 5). Love these weird things...

(One of these guys is available for trade. See the B/S/T.)

Honestly I was really only targeting the Cobb but I felt the other 3 were good value at the prices I bid and was expecting to be outbid, it just never happened. Got to check some big cards off my list!

Always wanted one of these since I was a kid. Nothing too fancy, just a nice representation and the only 55 I own.

One of the nicer $1 purchases I have made in a LONG TIME!

(Really tough to find variation with the name missing)

The card was at a local card shop in the "80% off" price bin, which is where they throw their off-grade cards. Don't forget to check the bargain bins!!!

The card was at a local card shop in the "80% off" price bin, which is where they throw their off-grade cards. Don't forget to check the bargain bins!!!
Holy @#$^! That was a score indeed!

Arrived today. Now down to one card for the 1-310 run in 1952 Topps. Yeah it’s 261 - Willie Mays. Took me long enough to gear up to spend for Billy Martin. Wonder when I’ll get there for Willie

I was at the flea market with my daughter today. She bought a Russian antique doll and a wooden carved cat. The old fellow had some baseball cards, all marked way overprice, but he threw these 3 in: Shotgun Shuba, Jungle Jim, and O'Toole/Pinson. Not great cards, but I like them. Every now and then you come across raw cards.

Picked this up at the Wilmington, MA show on Friday. It was one of only three I needed to complete my '47-'66 Exhibits. Now down to the '55 and '56 Yankee team cards.

Wow, when exactly was that card printed? After Dem Bums clinched the pennant, but before they won the Series??? Weird how they didn't wait a week or two and add "World Champions."

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

From '48 to '52, the Exhibit team cards were marked "World Champions" and "National League Champions" (since the AL won the Series each year). For some reason ESCO didn't do team cards in '53, then from '54 through '56, they were marked "AL Champions" and "NL Champions." Doesn't answer your question, I know. And why not continue with the "World Champs/League Champs" format? Definitely weird, as you say.

Picked up a raw copy of "The Mick". I may try to grade it after all the hoopla around grading settles down.

Default 1961 Topps Ron Santo

I've been passively picking up some HOF rookies, if nice looking ones come available at fair prices, and I had to jump on this one posted in the net54 B/S/T area last week.

Picked up two more 1958 hires root beer Dodgers for my team set. Need only Duke Snider now. Also picked up a 52 topps Snider partial bottom black border missing variation. I’ve owned the Atlantic Oil Osteen for a little while but just got around to getting it slabbed.

A couple cards to close out the month of August for me. When I receive cards, I like to look at the back. Read the blurbs. Compare stats. (The stuff all of us used to do before the lines between collecting and investing started to blur a little.)

When these cards arrived, I noticed some awesome similarities, so here's a bit of trivia for fun.
- Both players debuted young, starting their first season before their 21st birthday.
- On the cards I won, both players are featured after having played 11 full seasons in MLB.

Player A, thru 1st 11 seasons:
- 1656 Games
- 2085 Hits
- 351 Doubles
- 366 HR
- 1180 Runs
- 1216 RBI
- .320/.376/.567 Batting Line
- 1 MVP, 5 top-5 MVP seasons

Player B, thru 1st 11 seasons:
- 1657 Games
- 1855 Hits
- 352 Doubles
- 373 HR
- 1165 Runs
- 1131 RBI
- .304/.391/.562 Batting Line
- 2 MVP, 4 top-5 MVP seasons

See if you can guess without looking it up. I'll post the cards when someone guesses correctly, or tomorrow.
