early card w/player wearing batting glove
Posted By: dennis
if you have 1961 topps cards or a set chances are that you have looked at this card a # of times.(esp. since it is a low #) did you notice jr's wearing a batting glove? i don't think these caught on till the mid 60s and now it would be strange to see a player not wearing one. anyone have an earlier image of a player wearing a batting glove? |

In the newly released Home Run Derby dvds from 1959, some of the players are wearing "batting gloves", although I think they are actually golf gloves. |

Is it possible that's not a batting glove Romano is wearing, but rather a glove worn inside his catcher's mitt? |

Some reports that I read many years ago indicated that the first major leaguer to regularly wear a batting glove - one only - was Jackie Brandt of the Baltimore Orioles. He was considered something of a flake - not unlike Hawk Harrelson - so there may be something to the story. |

An underrated hitter, and all time tough guy team for me, right up there with Klu. I rarely, if ever, saw him with long sleeves on. I grew up in Queens, so I remember how brutal it could be in April and September (and October in 1973). |

Rusty is the answer to one of my favorite trivia questions. Who was the only major league player to ever get 500+ hits with each of four different teams? (And 100+ with a fifth team.) |
