1924 W-UNC vs W511
I recently picked up the following strip card that the seller deemed 1924 W-UNC. However, after viewing the following thread Link, are 1924 (or 1926) W-UNC exactly the same was 1926 W511? For example, if you submitted the card to SGC or PSA, could you basically pick W-UNC or W511 on the submission form and the TPG would slab it as the one you picked because there was no way to distinguish between the two? When I looked at the 2010 Standard Catalog, both W-UNC and W511 are still listed and it didn't say that the cards were the same.
Here is another thread on W511 that I read: Link |

Blue Duotone?
On a related question, was the card on the previous post "Blue Duotone," which the seller specified it as? It looks more like purple to me. I know that there are Blue Duotone and Maroon variations, but then there are different color tints such as orange, b/w, etc. Is the criteria basically if the card is not solid maroon, then it is blue duotone?
I have the following W511, but it is a light blue shade. |

Gary, you are correct they are one in the same. I think what happened is that they were originally listed in SCD as W-UNC but someone pointed out that they are from a set of predominately actors/actresses/aviators/etc. called W511 and it was corrected to list as W511 in the SCD but they failed to get rid of the original W-UNC entry. Think of it as a cut and paste (with corrected name) where they forgot to erase the original "cut" source, hence the double entry.

All varieties of W511. They are found with white stock and blue, black or purple ink, and on red stock with black ink. Also a variety of numbers and unnumbered versions. Also some variations in cropping.

Years ago I mentioned that the W-Unc card of Ruth really belonged to the 1926 W511, but Im not sure If I was the one who started the correction on the info in the catalogs or not, but it was about the same time.
The cards are found in 5 colors, blue, purple, B&W, red, and orange.... but I havent seen the Ruth in orange yet. Ruth is found with #1, #52, #71 and no number more info on the W511 set... http://www.moviecard.com/zamerican/stripcards/w511.html Last edited by fkw; 06-21-2011 at 05:57 PM. |
