Happy Bday Bill!

Greenies are "olive" with two coats, imo.

I have been looking for a 1936 Overland Candy Wrapper of Grove for many years... I finally found TWO! And they are different colors!

Those wrappers are sweet. There is a Greenberg from that lot that someone off here bought and it made it to ebay. Too bad it's beings held hostage by a $1,700 BIN/BO

I was looking at Eric's Gypsy Queens- they are indeed beautiful- and I see one of the labels read "salesman's sample." I've never heard of a saleman's sample before in that context. Is that labeled correctly? If it has a very thick mount wouldn't it have been cut from an advertising sign? Curious if anyone knows more about it.

Barry,

Apparently it was acquired years ago from a Terry Knouse find. I'm told Terry is one of the foremost experts on 19th century cards and he believes that this GQ Keefe was a sample card that a salesmen traveled with, and SGC holdered it as such. It is thicker than a standard OJ or Gypsy Queen card.

Personally I don't buy into the hype, I'm just happy to have the HOFer GQ card.

Eric

Thanks Eric. That explanation doesn't sound right to me, but I suppose it doesn't matter. I say it was cut down from an advertising poster. Nice piece either way.

Barry-You are correct; it was trimmed off an ad piece. I have a few of those. Terry had "interesting" explanations for cards he was selling.

Barry -

I agree with you and Jay's comments, as I said I don't but into Terry's hype either. The designation will be gone soon enough once its crossed over to a PSA case. PSA just added the N175 set to their registry yesterday.

Seth

You must have some "savings" savy.
When I went to college, I amassed a huge debt. I wasn't even thinking of cards in the 1980's much. Wish I had.
Would have been a good investment.

Those cards of yours aren't cheap.

Eric- as Jay said, Terry does not always know the real history behind many of the pieces he has. But where did SGC get that from? They're the ones who wrote "salesman sample" on their label ( I realize you can't speak for SGC).

Pretty excited about this one. The card is not pre-war, but it's signed by a couple guys we all know. Great thing about this card is that it's got Doyle's signature on a card relating to the 1912 season, which he was MVP of. Smokey Joe went 34-5 that year. I wasn't aware of the Loughlin set before I bought the card.

Not a July pickup, but I haven't posted this one yet. It isn't in the best condition, but I was really happy to finally get one of these.
