Whats a good way to find a list of cards for a certain player? Been looking thru my standard catalog and was curious if there was another way.

I usually use Beckett.com. But that's been for modern cards. I don't know how accurate or thorough their list would be for vintage and pre-war.

BW, here is a link to VCP, just use the player search. I don't think you have to have a subscription to use this service.

VCP is not a good way to go if you are looking for all cards for a given player. For example, Elmer Singleton has 12 cards that I know of - VCP lists only 4 of them. Beckett's Alphabetical Checklist lists 11 of the 12, missing only the 1974 unauthorized collectors issue (Broder Popcorn Cards).

You might want to read this thread:
http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=166503

In this thread I mentioned a nice database available in csv, ms access, and SAS formats (I had no takers). I now carry this database with me (in SQLITE format) on my phone and tablet so I always have it with me. Once in awhile that comes in handy. This database is not perfect either - it showed all 12 cards for Elmer Singleton but had his name as Elmer, Elmore, Bert, and Smokey so you have to know your players. It does seem to be pretty comprehensive.

Agree that Beckett's Alphabetical Checklist is excellent resource.

SportsCardForum.com also has an inventory/catalog feature similar to Beckett's that is pretty close to being as comprehensive. In some cases it lists a lot more of the oddballs and minor league stuff that Beckett doesn't cover, and also covers more of the sets SCD cataloged that Beckett missed.

Another way is to go to the PSA population report, and search on the player's name. Here's what it shows for Schaefer:

Link

Obviously, this will not pull up cards that haven't been graded or that PSA does not grade such as most Real Photo postcards and W-UNC issues.

Yeah that's a BIG list. Love the stories on how he joked around with people. Reminds me of my father. He has saw more purple gators than any one! (Grand kids love trying to find one before he does). Thanks for that list! And your time putting that together!

A tad off-topic. Maybe you've seen this photo before, OP.
Schaefer with 1915 Senators teammates, Cubans Jacinto Calvo and Merito Acosta. Gotta love the smiles. Scan taken from Shorpy site; they sell prints.
