Default T216 Kotton Help....survey

Posted By: mattsears

Hello-

I was wondering if you fellow board member would help me out. I am trying to compile a list of the various front and back combinations of the T216 Kotton set.

If you have any T216 Kottons would you please let me know:

1) Who the player is... and what pose

2) What back does it have

3) Is it a paper or heavy stock card

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Matt,
Great thread! Here's my one and only T216 Kotton (Someday I hope to have more! )

1. Player/Pose: Bridwell, N.Y. sliding
2. Back: Kotton Cigarettes with "Never go Out" slogan
3. Type: Paper stock

Regards,
Adam

Great topic.....here's the few T216's I have....

1. Kotten-Extra Mild(on back)
Bender
thick stock- type 1

3. Kotten- 1,2,3, (on back)
Bender
thick stock- type 1

2. Kotten- Never Go Out (on back)
Lobert
thin stock- type 2

4. Mino (back)
Gibson
thick stock- type 1

5. Virginia Extra
Dooin
thin stock- type 2

6. Virginia Extra
Doyle
thin stock- type 2

So far I have seen the "Kotten Extra Mild" and the "Kotten 1,2,3," and the Mino's with "only" thick stock. To the contrary I have "only" seen the other backs on thin stock, be only on thin stock These are very preliminary findings and most likely a board member will have seen other varieties. I think we covered this before and this was still the case....best regards

Wish I still had all my records I threw out when I quit collecting in 2002! But the few I can remember are below (though I did have three VA Extras and can't remember two of them).

VA Extra Bescher
Thin Stock

Mino Cobb (Batting)
can't remember the stock, but I think it was thin

Hey, these are the only two I can remember - Help Brian Daniels, I am getting old like you!

The T216 group has 5 different back variations (3 are thick stock, 2 are thin stock).

The T216-1 Kotton backs with "Kotton Tobacco ..." and "Kotton Cigarettes Never Go Out Extra Mild..." are both thick stock with glossy surface. The "Kotton Cigarettes Never Go Out Made By..." back is thin stock nonglossy. All T216-2 Minos are thick stock (glossy), and all T216-3 Virgina Extra backs are thin paper (nonglossy).

The cards I have or have recently owned are:

Chief Bender (white cap) T216-1-2(type 2 back) "Kotton Cigarettes Never Go Out Extra Mild..." (thick)
Rube Marquard T216-1-2(type 2 back) "Kotton Cigarettes Never Go Out Extra Mild..." (thick)
Christy Mathewson T216-1-3(type 3 back) "Kotton Cigarettes Never Go Out Made By..." (thin)
Joe Tinker T216-2 "Mino" (thick)

As far as I know, all of the following are thick stock (not sure if I have actually handled a thin stock T-216 for comparison - is the difference obvious or subtle?):

1. Bender blue background, striped hat (Baltimore Feds): Kotton Tobacco, Mild and Sweet (Factory No. 11)

2. Bender blue background, striped hat (Baltimore Feds): Kotton Cigarettes, Never Go Out, Extra Mild, Not in a Trust (Factory No. 4)

3. Bresnahan (Chicago Nat'l): Kotton Cigarettes, Never Go Out, Extra Mild, Not in a Trust (Factory No. 4)

4. McGraw (N.Y. Nat'l): Kotton Tobacco, Mild and Sweet (Factory No. 11)

5. McQuillan (Pittsburgh Nat'l): Kotton Cigarettes, Never Go Out, Extra Mild, Not in a Trust (Factory No. 4)

Tom.

I won a pair of Joe Tinker ones in John Burks auction of last year both with

"never go out" backs. Blue portrait and red batting pose akin to Buck Weaver Tango Brand Egg card.

I have three* Marquard red throwing poses-

"never go out"," mild and sweet" and " Mino"-thick

commons-Dooin,Doyle,Kleinow,Siegle,Murphy,Chase-Blue port all "never Go Out"

lastly-Mathewson-white cap/Virgina Extra in ex/mt--

I collect Matty cards if anyone can help!

I have a T216 Honus Wagner; throwing pose; identifies him as a second baseman; thicker variety; Kotton back that (if I remember correctly, I'll have to double check) says "Never Go Out"

They all say "Never Go Out" (except the 1,2,3,variety) ..the ones that say "Extra Mild" are more common, imo......and are on the thick stock and less scarce than the ones that don't say "Extra Mild" and are on thin stock....later
