As I started thinking about it, while there are a lot of cards that may be WORTH more than $100,000... how many have actually SOLD PUBLICLY in an auction to where the MARKET dictated the price???

Off the top of my head, I can think of:

The same PSA 8 M101-5 Ruth card that sold for $120,000 in the Spring Sotheby's auction just sold for $140,000 in the December Mile High Card Co auction.

I keep records of Goudey sales, but don't keep records of when or where they sold...but I have the following in my spreadsheet:

1933 Goudey 181 Babe Ruth PSA 9 $100K

It's possible I rounded and it was actually below $100K.

and two close ones:
1933 Goudey 106 Nap Lajoie PSA 9 $96K and $92K
I think they were two different cards, but not 100% sure.

A couple of years ago a Tiger Woods 1996 SI for kids BGS 10 sold for over $100,000. I know this is not a vintage card but it deserves mention based on the short list.

I can't trust a "sales price"... because it could just be one person "selling" it to his friend (who turned around and sold it right back) just to "hype up" the card.

If it went in a real auction... then someone really did pay for the card.

That's a good point. I do not know for sure. I will try and find out.

However, I would be careful by saying that a quoted sale from a third party auction is without minipulation.

Without naming any names, I have seen the same cards sold from the same auction house multiple times.

At least with ebay, you can see the winning bidders ID and underbidders.

In my opinion, especially when you are talking about the 100,000 cards, I doubt any auction house would allow a card to end without a little bidding underneath.

I am not saying this is totally a bad thing but I am not sure that third party auction prices are any more accurate than ebays or any private sale.

Personally, I think the GEM Mint prices realized for the $100K cards must be included, but I am more interested in general rarity than condition rarity. Meaning, what is the highest paid prices for the lowest grade cards?

I got 92K for an ungraded Lindstrom back in 1999. In that era that was really big money. The card was eventually graded PSA-3 and my guess is it would easily surpass 100K today.

The PSA SMR says that the first PSA 10 1954 Aaron sold for more than $100,000.

It was the SECOND one that sold for $94k.

Privately at least three Four Base Hits (of Kelly and Ewing ) have
traded at well over $100,000

The Just So of Cy Young in a 7 -9 condition (at least one exists)
would easily break six figures

A Walter Johnson Ramly in a "9" will come close

A Joe Jackson T 210 in a PSA 8 or 8 would certainly do the trick

In two or three years a Delong of Gehrig in 9 will be a $100K card

And if you count the Boston Garter ad sheet of 4 which was issued
as one card with four players (in accordian style) I have passed on
offer well in excess of $150K.


Any aaditional thoughts are welcomed

Bruce- Neither of the Four Base Hit Kellys have traded hands for 100K, as they have been in the possession of their current owners for many years; the only known Just So Cy Young would probably grade a 3 or perhaps a 4 on a good day; there is no known Ramly Johnson in a 9 or T210 Jackson in an 8 (the highest graded I believe is a 2), and I doubt a Delong Gehrig in 9 exists either. You are dealing in hypothetical sales and not real ones.

I can easily think of 1,000 "hypothetical" cards that would command more than $100,000 at auction, like a PSA 10 1914 Cracker Jack Matty or a PSA 10 T206 Cobb w/Cobb back (or probably ANY of the backs at that grade)...

but I was trying to focus SOLELY on public auctions that have actually taken place.


I am also trying to avoid PRIVATE SALES because of how nebulous and vague those are.

If ONE person is a sucker and gets ripped off (i.e., the Tiger Woods card)... that does NOT give a true indication of the market value of the card like a public auction would.

1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams that John Branca bought a few years ago from Mastro. I think it sold for approx $110k.

I believe the psa 10 Sport Kings Ty Cobb came close also.

A 1935 National Chicle Bronco Nagurski graded psa 9 sold for $85k a few years ago on Ebay.

I was also told by Gilbert Porter at the national that BMW cards reportedly sold his psa 9 N172 Kelly for $100k. Can you confirm this Mike or Brian?

Not sure about the Kelly, but the Nagurski was actually an SGC 96 and I believe it is the highest price paid for a football card. BMW was the sellers of the Nagurski.

The clemente rookie is a 1 of 1 and how is it that you are the authority that decides who may or maynot have overpaid for an item. The card sold in excess of 100K which was what you were looking for. If I remember correctly when Mr. Foglel paid 121K for the 1st mantle 10 (the first purchase) people thought he overpaid as well.

Nagurski was in a psa 9 holder when BMW first had it graded. They crossed it over to an sgc 96 right before they sold it. Had the under bidder won it the card would have been crossed back to psa.

I know a lot of privately held cards would break the 6 figure mark but one that was recently graded that would go well into 6 figures would be the SGC 98 1914 CJ Joe Jackson.

Is it possible that that Jackson would approach seven figures? Given it would be virtually impossible to find even a single common graded 98, and that's a '14 Jackson, seems like it would sell in excess of 500K. Just speculating of course.
