2013 Collecting Goal Thread: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=160011

Nelson, it looks like you changed course!

I far exceeded my 2013 goals, picking up 12 E105s and the Smith's Mello Mint gum wrapper. I don't expect to pick up any more this year.

For 2014, I will just repeat last year's goal: plan for another awesome Chicago Cleveland National and slowly pick up another E105 or two between now and then.

My only goal last year was to pick up some more cards from my wantlists. That is just luck of the draw, but I did make some headway. I also picked up a lot of stuff I didn't know I wanted until I saw it. For 2014 I'd like to do less of the latter.

I need a T215 Red Cross Merkle.

And I expect to find many other cards that I will want as soon as I see them.

Great thread idea. I'm finally at a place in life that will allow me to finish my base Topps Clemente set. (finished paying off student loans about a month ago so that will free up a lot of money)

Other than that--T206 Walter Johnson cards are some of my favorites in the industry. I'd love to snag a couple of mid grade Walters for the shelf.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Get Johnny's leftovers and would love one more blue port Chase.

Trim down the collection and focus on the want list.

Since I collect pre-war, vintage and modern, it's going to be hard to reach all my goals. But I like to set the bar high to push myself. So here are my lofty (for me, anyways) goals for 2014.

Pre-war: The 1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig is at the top of my want list. Before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st next year, I will own this card. I saw Wonka's, and just fell in love with it. Mine won't be as nice, but a variety of a '34 Gehrig will sit in my SDP soon. Other cards I would really like to add: A T205 Christy Mathewson, a T202 Cobb Steals Third, '33 Goudey Al Simmons, 1915 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson, '33 Goudey Rogers Hornsby. A '33 Goudey Babe Ruth will be in 2015.

Of course, my focus will be on the T206 set. I plan on adding my first Ty Cobb (bat off shoulder), as well as a Matty dark cap, Lajoie with bat, an Eddie Collins (still looking for that one that wows me), an Addie Joss portrait, a Hal Chase with pink background, and I'm looking to upgrade my Walter Johnson to a PSA 4 and cross it over to SGC. That's my favorite card, so why not? That's a priority along with the Gehrig. I also really want a Tris Speaker, a Hugh Duffy and a Sam Crawford throwing, an Ed Walsh and a Keeler portrait. I'm going to also pick up a Hughie Jennings two hand if I can. Love that card. It's the embodiment of pure joy. Two non Hall of Famers I'd like to add are the Dutch Revelle Southern Leaguer, and the Pattee portrait. Edit: oh yeah, and the man in my avatar.

Vintage cards: two of my all-time favorite cards, a 1953 Bowman Color Stan Musial and a 1958 Topps Roberto Clemente. I want to upgrade my 1975 Topps Robin Yount to a PSA 8.5, pick up a George Brett 1975 Topps, and a 1953 Bowman Color Mickey Mantle. Then I'd like to add several from the 1956 Topps set, including Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams, maybe a Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews and a nice Sandy Koufax. I might have to leave the '55 Clemente and the '54 Aaron for the year after, but I will pick up a few other Clementes towards my master set. Maybe a '61 and a '66. I'd like to pick up a Willie Mays, too.

Modern: a 2002 Bowman Chrome Joe Mauer auto, a 2005 Bowman Chrome Prince Fielder auto, and I better pick up a 2013 Byron Buxton Bowman Chrome auto before it explodes in price.

Some football cards, too. A high grade 1981 Topps Joe Montana to replace the one I traded away like an idiot. An '84 Topps Dan Marino, and a 2005 Playoff Contenders Aaron Rodgers. I also need to get the last Packers to finish off my 1965 Philadelphia Gum team set: Jim Taylor, Forrest Gregg, Willie Davis and Henry Jordan.

So yeah, just a couple of cards to pick up. I obviously won't hit all of these, but I've got a good outline of what I want for the next year or two.

So I failed to meet any of the goals I set for myself a year ago. Mostly due to the fact I wonder around the hobby quite aimlessly and I have come to the conclusion my collecting goals are in fact an enigma, wrapped in a riddle and surrounded by mystery.

But it is good to have goals even if I decide a month from now to shift focus... again.

-Hit the 100 mark on my each M101-4/5
-Hit the 50 mark on T209-II (this is predicated on cards becoming available)
-Focus a little more on HOFers from difficult sets

2013 Goals:
1. B18s: add 35 to the set. I abandon this goal and stopped collecting the set.
2. Mantle Master Set: add 20 new cards. I probably added something in the 40-50 card range.
3. T206: don't buy a single new card. I could not pass up some great deals and probably added 4-5 new ones to my set.

2014 Goals:
1. Mantle Master Set: add one more U.S. issued card (will finish out my set of nationally issued Mantle cards), add the final three postcards I need, and pick up at least one foreign issued card I am still looking for (preferably 1-2 of the Venezuelans that are still on my list.
2. Get married.

Default Goals

2013 - added to my collection of cards that were produced in Louisiana.

Made it to the 50 card mark on T213-2's, added 1920 and 1921 Holsum, added Mino and 1917 Weil Baking. Completed all 3 Kotton backs.

2014 - get the T213-2 collection to the half way point. Try to pick up a low grade T211 and Tango Eggs and T215-2. See if I might get lucky and turn up a cheap Virginia Extra or Mothers Bread or Pirate.

And, as always, try to purchase modern collections to flip so I can use the profits to buy more items for my personal collection.

Well, these goals were an epic fail, mostly because I decided that I needed to rebuild my savings before going hog wild spending on my collection.

I only managed to pick up two of the cards from my 2014 goals list, a very nice PSA 4 Dutch Revelle T206 portrait, and the Sam Crawford throwing T206. Both are in my image gallery.

I will be working on my collection soon.

For 2014 I would like to get closer to finishing my '47-'66 Exhibits set.
Also keep adding to my Brooklyn Dodgers and Negro League collection.
And I might try to build a '64 Topps Giants set.

I far exceeded my 2013 goal of getting a bunch more pre-war Yankees, I went nuts and grossly over-spent, my wife would kill me if she knew how much I spent!

Number one 2014 goal is a negative goal - I gotta stop my buying addiction and slow down and only buy what I can really afford!!!

Number two 2014 goal is a 1-card goal, I really want a T207 Hoff to complete my Yankees team set run of T205, T206, T207.

Number three 2014 goal is to try to pick up another Ruth card from his playing days, I have about 11 or 12 now, love The Babe!!!

Number four 2014 goal is to just continue to search out pre-war Yankees that I dont have and can afford.

After roughly a five (5) year hiatus, my personal and professional life has finally calmed down enough where I can get back to the things I love. Baseball and cards!!!!! Hoping to pick back up the T207 obsession that I had to abandon the first go around. Great thread btw! !

Well, 2013 was a rollicking time for my collection. I finally got the PreWar side of it going, and thanks largely to Joe T/Vintageclout I knocked off seven key cards from my want list. Also added some of my favorite 70s cards as they popped up. Here they are...

As to 2014, I have two cards on the want list, which I won't jinx myself by saying now. I think one may be close!

What is up with the flip on that card? Was there a time the SGC flip didn't have a barcode? Also there are two different fonts, the font for the set name and the name of the card don't match. Was the flip just edited for your photo sharing?

No editing, they've used several generations of flips over the years. I forget offhand to which period this one conforms. I'm sure there must be a record of the flip generations around here somewhere, alas my food coma laziness prohibits me from searching at the moment...

Even the first generation had a barcode. I can't think of a single SGC flip that didn't have one. I checked the number and it didn't show up on SGC website either (but I have known of legit cards doing this before too). Also I have never known them to use two different fonts for the text. It doesn't make sense for the font for "1909" and "e90-1" to be different (the rest of each line is off too, but is very noticeable looking at the numbers).

There is a current thread about the labels. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?p=1210647
There is no mention of a generation where they went without the barcode.

Had several goals in 2013, succeeded in purchasing a t206 green Cobb in psa 4 (thanks texxxxx), reached the 300 mark on different graded t206's, also got a good start on e90-1, failed to purchase other higher end t206's at reasonable prices.

Goals for 2014, t206 Mathewson portrait - sovereign reverse psa 4, t206 Johnson portrait psa 5, add 10 e90-1's, begin t205 in earnest, finish my 1953 topps set.

My collecting goal for 2014 is to find more T206 scrap for Johnny's collection.

Seriously though, find a few more T206s and get a little closer to finishing my set.

I started my t206 collection this year in January. purchased around 23 so far this year. I would like to pick up a cobb this weekend at the philly show. for 2014, I would like to collect more of the hall of famers so I may not buy as many commons. but hey, who knows what I will buy.... depends on the mood and the deal. also, would like to consider collecting another set as well but not sure if that is a good idea.

I plan to continue my quest to attain the following T206 HOF's:

All (4) T. Cobbs
All (2) W. Johnsons
Lajoie throwing Jan 2014
Lajoie with bat Jan 2014
Mathewson portrait Jan 2014
Mathewson dark cap Jan 2014
All (3) C. Youngs Jan 2014

I already have the Lajoie portrait & Mathewson white cap.
