Default No decent baseball card store in NYC

How depressing is that. I've scoped out 2 or 3, one just a few days ago, and they've all been pretty lame. I guess you can't pay the big city rent anymore on the back of baseball cards and autographed balls. In a city with 500 places selling poke bowls, you'd think a few cards stores could thrive. Nope.

I was there this week. A handful of pre 1950 cards. Two displays. Nice for what it is, but I'm a vintage collector of pre war and that was non existent essentially. (Might have seen a single Goudey card?)

Brigandi on W44 was pretty cool in its day. Last time I walked by looked like they've left the building.

I prefer any I've been to in NYC over any I've been to in New Jersey. But maybe because I've had to deal with having maybe the worst one in Jersey being the nearest to me. The guys just sits in the back on the computer. Everything it over priced and he will not negotiate. I also have heard a ton of people say he sell fake autographs. The spot is for the true suckers that think they know the hobby. Then get ripped a new one with a smile on there face.

You hit the nail on the head. Even if there was a shop with everything you could ever want, they would be asking so much for it just to pay the rent that you wouldn't buy anything. In fact, you'd probably come on here and complain about the awesome shop you found with the astronomical prices

Prob true. Brigandi used to have some pretty nice stuff. And it was all insanely marked up.

We have quite a few good ones in New Jersey depending on what you are looking for. In total there are probably about 40 stores across the state that sell cards.... Also I think brigandi is still in business.

Do you mean insanely hacked up? Certainly back in the days of SCD ads they had that reputation.

Check out- Gotta Have It on East 57th. Ask about cards (typically hidden away), but some nice memorabilia.

What happened to Alex's on Upper East Side? Comics and cards. Has or had antique furniture store across the street also.

Got my greatest bargain ever there--30 years ago--ungraded Marquard CJ--turned out to be top-graded PSA 7.

I used to go there when I lived on the UES and grab whatever Fisk cards they pulled. Nice guys there. We moved to NJ in 2009, so no clue if they are still around.

Indeed, but they do have some cool stuff. Walked through on numerous lunch hours.

They were renovating their space last time I walked by. Wasn't sure if they were moving, shutting down, etc.

Surprised to hear this. I bought this Wagner from them for $1,000, which I thought was a pretty good deal:

There are a couple out on Long Island; the names are escaping me right now and American Legends in Westchester County that are pretty good and fairly priced.

I know that Mark at American Legends only keeps some of his vintage out in the showcase because they are taken up by shiny new refractors, but if you ask, he has a solid selection in the back.

Thanks! Hit up Bob Beck in Livingston today. He had some decent pre and post war stuff. Had a nice conversation with him about vintage, so a successful visit just for the cameraderie.

Theres a lot of nice looking young ladies that buy poke bowls...its not exactly the same demographic that are set builders.... if you told me there are 500 successful video arcades in the city that would be different..
