Default Ruth Autographed Ball Real?

Might be able to pick up this ball, but this is not my area of expertise, and there are a lot of fakes. Thoughts? Real or fake?

Maybe some better pictures without the glare. Also pics of the stampings on the ball will help.

Sorry, it's the only photo they gave me. If I get to see it in person, what should I look for?

I'll post better pics of the Ruth ball if I can get them. The same seller has these items.

I knew someone would know if the Mantles were good or not. I tend to have major doubts about the Ruth if the Mantles aren't good. However, I did think the Koufax looked OK.

I'm not a Koufax guy so can't say if it's real or not...but...what many sellers do is "sprinkle" a group of balls with a few lower priced authentic ones. That way they will give the impression the whole group is real. Ebay is loaded with sellers like this. One seller a while back had individual signed baseballs of 11 members of the Home Run club...He was selling the whole group of 11 balls in the one auction. The most expensive ball in the group would be the Mantle. And of course the Mantle was bad.

I'm not an expert but I don't like that Kofax.

It looks like the letters are squashed together and the "S" in Sandy seems oddly shaped.

I'd love to hear the opinions of more experienced people with his signature.

I looked closer at the Ruth and I'm not really liking what I see compared to some "known" good examples.

I thought red thread was the standard for official AL balls in the 1930s?

No. Ruth signed plenty of red stitch only balls. Shelly usually uses the red faced smiley to show his disapproval of autographs but someone beat him to it.

Thanks for your opinion Brendan. I guess I'll let the cat out of the bag. These items are being offered at an estate sale. If you happen to be in the area maybe worth dropping by. Here's the info:

Sale Location:5 Arrowhead Ln
Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274

Sale Dates and Times:
Thursday Sep 28, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Friday Sep 29, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Saturday Sep 30, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

They have multiple items "authenticated" by Ken Golden at Scoreboard. Are these all bad? Here's the web address if you want to look at the pictures.

https://www.estatesale.com/sales/vie...=59cd1f41af997

I'll post a few for those that can't get to the link or if it disappears. I notice the Ruth ball seems to be gone from the listing. Maybe if some of it is good, someone can go cherry pick the good stuff.

Joe D looks good to me as does the Ryan, the Mantle looks fishy (to be honest all Mantles look fishy to me,I'm paranoid) and I don't know Griffey Jr well enough to comment.

I'd pass on the Mantle. That's a phony Scoreboard COA attached with it. If the COA was real I'd scrutinize the ball. No need if the COA is bad.

On Goldin/Scoreboard COA's what do we look for other than obviously copies that are off center, blotchy etc?

Is it the way the verbiage is printed? Someone said the DiMaggio is good on this post but the Mantle based on the cert may not be. Looks like COA's verbiage was organized differently?

Street address on one and not the other? Spacing of paragraph?

Thanks guys!

For starters, you should never trust a COA (although a fake COA is a quick way to discard an item immediately). I've seen hundreds of real Scoreboard COAs attached to phony items on eBay.

A real Scoreboard certificate will look like those in the estate sale (minus the one attached to the Mantle). Thicker paper (with a watermark I believe), nice sharp edges, not obviously photocopied, no blotchy signature (taken from an image from on the Internet), the item description not photoshoped in a different font, etc.

If the COA is fake the item is certainly fake. Don't waste your time looking at it anymore. If the COA is real then you can start to compare the autograph to exemplars, etc.

The Mantle is a forgery.

As for the DiMaggio, it could be authentic, but I need to see the full sig.

I was once offered a Babe Ruth signed ball. Came with a Scoreboard COA with Ruth's name on it .
Sometimes you wonder how stupid these people really are.
Though after a lengthy time running classified ads all over the country I realize how stupid many people really are.

Spot on Richard. If we got rid of all the stupid people, the world would be a very small place...and nobody left to play professional sports (yeah, I'm talking to you NFL). LOL

I like your Richard Dawson! Someone needs to go to this sale and let us know how much they were selling these for, fake and real. Like I said before, maybe someone can cherry pick the real stuff and educate people like me that would have been ripped off if I would have tried to buy these. If this is really someone's estate, they got ripped off over and over again.

Wow the Williams especially on that 500HR ball is really horrid.
Looks like it was written by a forgery school drop out.

So, I was just wondering if anyone ended up going to this sale. If so, did you buy anything? I'd be curious to know what price they had on the fake Ruth.
