Default 1952 Topps Pete Reiser Gray Back on Ebay

This just went live on ebay, and I wanted to give a headsup to all all you master set collectors. At last, a gray back Reiser for sale. I've never seen one before. How much will it fetch, you suppose?

Looks like Dean's PSA 5 copy sold within the hour as a $40k BIN despite the $10k starting bid. Wonder if it will be relisted due to non-payment.

Possibly a buying error, since he "sold" it a week ago for 2750

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/292234362937

Hmmm, a Pete Reiser gray back PSA 5 or:

1) Buy lunch for 7,000 days at Chick-fil-A(TM)
2) Purchase 1.5 Honda Odysseys with that backup camera thingy and fold-down rear seats
3) Save right around 850 children from starvation in Nigeria, Tanzania, or Ethiopia

I suppose you might still have money enough for a PSA 5 non-gray back after any of those alternative expenditures (not sure about that).

I'm sorely tempted to try to bid on this card, but on the other hand, I don't really collect gray backs (yet) and this card really ought to go to someone trying to finish out their set.

On a related note, the one card I have not seen come up for sale is a gray back Billy Martin. Now that is one I WOULD buy.

I own zero gray backs but I'd sure love to have that one for my 52 Topps collection!

Sadly, not a chance I will be bidding, however.

Neither of those are actual gray backs.
But good for those who get taken by the flip.

It's funny you say that as I was also thinking the same thing, but due to my lack of knowledge/experience, and the fact I have never seen one in hand, I just assumed the flip was likely correct?

In my opinion, the front looks more grey than the back, but maybe that is a known fact and has been seen before or it could be the scan?

When I first seen it, I thought I have cards, even outside of the #131-190 series/range that look more grey than that, but I assume it has been proven, beyond a reasonable doubt that greys only exist within that, #131-#190 range?

(E-Bay Reiser and some of my backs)

I ended the listings so I can relist them with the "gray back" in the title..
so they go back up tonight at the same time they were listed for before.

The winner has the ability to have PSA review it and if PSA deemed it a regular back, it would be subject to their insured guarantee to downgrade the card and reimburse the owner the difference.

I've owned quite a few gray backs and have seen psa make 2 mistakes labeling them wrong.

#130 Sheldon Jones labeled gray back (wrong series)

#189 reiser sold in REAa few years back mislabeled as a gray back.

Are they any other examples of mislabeked grays to support your claim

It looks fine to me, and the obverse has the characteristic faded yellow look. I'd have no problem bidding on this.

He was specifically asking about 1952 Gray Backs, not all the other mechanical errors that PSA puts together. That is what your comment seemed to convey.

Below is an image of the GB next to a normal WB...to me there is a discernible difference. The GB appears consistent with my lone GB I have in my collection. My GB came as part of a lot I purchased from this same seller of the 52 189 GB PSA 1.5. This seller sells mainly modern, but offers vintage through consignment. It is possible that their consignor realized they were mistakenly including 52 grey back cards in their lots and started having them graded to offer as singles.

When you have the top 3-4 gray back guys already bidding on a card, it's safe to assume it's legit.

The Reiser in this lot was mislabeled and properly removed as it should have been. The others in this lot, imo, look a lot different than the Reiser and imo, far more believable.
http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/...plete-psa-set/

Until the day comes where I can actually hold one in hand, I guess I am going to continue to struggle with these.

Some that I have seen remove all doubt as they are clearly gray, both front and back, but others leave me wondering if an overzealous TPG made a mistake.

24 hours in and the card is already up to $1900.

Anyone want to take side bets on what this card finishes out at? I predict $4500.

If it's as tough as I have read it is, I'd say it will get that for sure.

And really that high price is what keeps me from bidding on this card. Because it just doesn't quite make sense that there are far fewer Reiser gray backs graded by PSA, given that he would've been printed in the same ratios as the other grayback players. And he was a fairly well known player, compared to the others in that series, which makes it doubly odd the grayback seemingly survives in fewer numbers than the others.

Personally I suspect there are more out there, and when a card like this fetches a high price, it tends to get people checking their cards. I would not be surprised at all if a couple more turn up in the months to come, and as a result, we'll see that population tick up a bit.

The pop was 6 for a long time and now it's 9. 3 came up for sale just this year, and I only ever remember seeing one sale before that. Ever. With some pops now at 30, the outliers under 15 we can assume are Sps.

I still regret getting sniped on a gray back Ramazotti a year or so ago. He's almost as rare as the Reiser card.

I find Billy Martin is about as tough to find as Pete Reiser with these mysterious gray backs.

I need 28 more of these gray backs to complete my 1952 TOPPS master set.

During the 1980's, when I completed my basic 407-card 1952 TOPPS (52T) set, I searched for these "mysterious" mid-series gray backs.
Back then, they were selling for the price of a common 52T low # card. Billy Martin was about $75. And, since I was a Billy Martin fan, I
acquired 2 of his gray backs.
In recent years, I was offered "big bucks" for these cards. I sold the lower condition card, and kept the Martin shown here.

I just wanted to wish good luck to everyone bidding on the auction tonight. I know how exciting it can be when a tough, coveted card comes up for sale. Some day I hope to collect the gray backs, but until then I'll be staying out of this one. I just really hope the card finds its way into someone's master set, so they can be that much closer to completion!

The "winner" of Dean's $40k offering of this GB card is also bidding on this one....is this bidder trying to corner the Reiser GB market or did the deal with Dean's "fall through"?

http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d...p2471758.m4792

http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d...p2471758.m4792

Bidding at $3350+ on the 1.5 as of now.

See that was something I was unclear about. I thought the Dean's card subsequently was relisted, like there was an error or something with that original BIN.

Very close, Brian. I actually thought it would sell for more than that, but it does give a pretty good indication what a higher graded card will go for, if one or more is out there?

PSA 8 sold for about $7,500 (after the auction house premium) a few years back.

And that was the single highest graded Grey back of any player at the time. (Haven't checked recently - it still may be).

Cheers,
Patrick

And that was the single highest graded Grey back of any player at the time. (Haven't checked recently - it still may be).

An 8, based on what the 1.5 went for, would be $20-$30K, if not more?

I use Dean's cards as a price metric. Whatever he's selling his cards for, I know that the actual value is about 25% less.

I went on COMC this morning looking for 52 Topps cards. If you don't know, COMC lists cards from the highest priced to the lowest priced and after about 10-15 pgs, I finally came across some cards that were reasonably priced.

You'll never guess who had their cards listed in the first 10-15 pgs.

I have bought a bunch of 52s off comc lately, Irv. Working on my set and just started the autographed set registry too. So I'm sorry if comc is a little sparse...
