Here it is guys, the Baseball Encyclopedia is great because it allows you to ask great questions like was Hornsby's line stats of 42 hrs., 152 RBIs, and .401 the best hitting season ever for an infielder. If there was a better one, who was it and which year. |

This is the greatest offensive season, period, and his 5 year stretch from 1921-5 is the best ever. he averaged over .400. Not even Cobb did that. |

In 1927, Lou Gehrig batted .373 with 52 doubles, 18 triples, 47 home runs, and 175 RBI's. That's not too shabby. He also had a 184 RBI season in 1931. |

RBI's are always the product of men getting on base, but what about the 117 extra base hits? That's a simply mind boggling total. |

I just got my copy of the SABR Baseball List & Record Book in the mail yesterday and it is fascinating to read --a quick look at just two catagories shows Rogers Hornsby as having the highest career batting average (.358) by a right-handed batter and the record for the highest career on base percentage by a right- handed batter (.434). |

Hornsby had a five year stretch where he averaged .403! Nobody has come close to that, not even Cobb or Jackson. |

1922 is the amazing year because he not only hit .400, he hit 40 HRs too. We will probably never see it in our lifetime, but Bonds sure tried to give it a run. |

Sorry guys I guess I didn't read the question fully. Hack did play 2nd base for 5 games in 1933 though. |

Give ARod 14 HR in 19 games now. Ties record for homers in April, and its only the 23rd! |

Well guys, we mentioned a lot of great hitting infielders. The way A Rod is hitting now, he will surpass them all by a substantial margin. |
