Default w-unc King of Clubs John McGraw

I have had the following a Red w-unc King of Clubs John McGraw for a few years now.

Recently someone reached out to me with a scan of a card they have had for quite some time and asked if I had anymore info. Theirs is tan (basically cardboard color with black print on it). I have linked it to this post. I really don't have any more info on this set. I know that I own the red tinted one, but other than that I know nothing about this set.

Does anyone have any more info on this set?

He reached out to me too. At first I thought it was a W560 but then looked again and it's not, of course. Also, based on the W560 id I didn't like the cardstock. But with it being the other issue I think it's fine. My guess is it is just another color.

Without seeing a scan with the original question he posed I suggested he look at the w560 set as well. Once he proved the scan, as you noticed as well, it obviously wasn't w560.

There's a thread where Adam catalogues this entire playing card set, but I could not find it. I found a similar thread here: Link that shows some of the other cards in this set. I have four of the Ruth's with slight color variations.

Mixed subject set that (as far as baseball goes includes Babe Ruth (AD), Bob Meusel 6C), Tris Speaker (9S), and John McGraw (KC).)

Set also includes boxers and actors as far as we know (pictures are some that I have picked up over the years)...

Keep in mind there is another set that appears to be all acors that have oval pictures in the middle (not square) that appear to be from a completely different set.

The cards were issued in vertical strips of ten. Sometimes you find a card with a long top or bottom as a result of being the end card. It is a very hard set to assemble.

That Ruth run is sick...

Here is the speaker:

here is one of the long cards:

ETA: couldn't any of these kids use scissors?

I believe it is....... think I actually bought it unslabbed from an auction site, not Ebay. I may have a couple 'raw' boxer cards... maybe even a Tris Speaker, I'll have to check and post those pics for the record.

Default thanks for the intel

thanks Leon and original poster for the info - much appreciated

the card was found in a 1929 book on the stock market that my grandfather left behind and it was being used as a book mark. the book is far more valuable to me than the card.

I'm glad I saved it - sold most of my bb cards in the late 80's to pay for college but kept a few of my favorite players. I will be trading this in for a few bucks and a 1955 Jackie Robinson which is the one card I wish I hadn't sold.

I am a collector of many things but baseball cards are way down on my list

it is interesting to me the different names given the set by the grading co's- as evidenced by a few of the pics is this thread and the other on cut cards

they also seem to have different stock - see mine below. looking at one of the Ruth's I see similar stock but maybe reversed?

because these cards were used in a game I would guess the survival rate is relatively low.

in the past few weeks I have seen a number of them for sale - boxers, actors, and a few baseball players. The Jack Johnson is cool, dig that. Currently there's a Tris Speaker for sale....I sent my card to SGC and am waiting on it's return

The Nonsports entries in this set appear to be artwork from the American Caramel E123 set.............

So folks will know, my understanding is SGC didn't like the McGraw cardstock either. Cardstock is one of the big indicators in pre-wwII cards...

Default Better late than never

Here is my McGraw that I have had for at least 5 years. It has a different color front (grayish), and is tan on back, a two-toned combo which I don't remember seeing on other strip card sets before. It seems like this set is special in that way.
