I don't purchase too much modern, but I like this card. Has an old school feel to it, although thinner card stock than the 1970 & 1971 Topps Supers.

2019 Topps Heritage Box Loader & Wrapper (same image as 1970 Topps card)...

Very cool companion piece. I even like the envelope with the postal stamp.

Also, I’m with you I don’t pick up much of the modern stuff, but I like the box topper. I picked up a Brooks one as well when they came out. Liked the look...

Thanks Mark & Mike!

Mike, there was another one on eBay I think last week, but it had a hefty price tag ($500). The seller has relisted it a few times, so I’m sure he’ll relist it again. He did offer a Best Offer option I think.

Trying to put a run of Pirates pocket schedules from 1955-1972 (the schedules from the 1950s are tough to find). Here are a few years I don't think I've posted yet...

1962...

1963...

1972...

Strange how the Pirates/Allegheny Motor Inn used an old Roger Maris graphic on their schedule. Perhaps a subtle dig about the 1960 World Series?

Thanks docpatlv. If you really like it (rather than just being polite), then I'd like to gift it to you in appreciation of your thread and all you've done for it.

For various reasons it doesn't "fit" into my collection. I got it since it seemed scarce, yet not particularly pricey; but now it is an odd one out for me, and I'd be thoroughly satisfied if it found a good appreciative home...seriously, let me know.

WOW, very nice and classy gesture, that card couldn't find a better home than docpatlv's collection. Kudos to you!

I don't mind that this is OC. I like this pix to begin with and I'm not that fond of the grey borders anyhow (though they have grown on me over time).

I’ve never seen that poster before and it’s just so cool looking. “Need” to get that thing framed (nicely) and up in a prominent place

Wonder where that bat is?

Well, after a seemingly neverending trip up and down the east coast, Roberto's 1957 Topps blank back has found a new home.

I can't thank Michael (Empty77) enough for his generosity. As I told him, it is the most generous gift I have ever received on Net54. He was a class act all the way through, even when the card seemed to be delivered to the wrong address at one point. It all worked out and I am ecstatic to add him to the collection.

Thanks again Michael!!!

FYI: Hunt has one right now, lot #282 finishing 7/9 in live format it seems, no bids yet.

I saw that one. It's has attracted some bidders as it's now at $520. That's almost twice what I paid for mine. It's hard to place a value on such items due to scarcity. It is a beautiful item if you are in to Clemente. I'm curious what it will bring in on Tuesday.

Michael & Mike,

It is a great poster, saw Mike post on the memorabilia side it's from 1981. Did not know that.

Speaking of posters, here's one from 2019. I just liked the way it looked. It's for The Clemente Museum block party. If you've never seen photos of the museum, its worth doing a search. He has some amazing Clemente items.

It is curious, since it had been live for days to weeks with no bids and a min bid of $100 if I recall, and then within a few hours of when I mentioned it here, it's up to $500...makes it appear I'm plugging it or have something invested in the outcome...which I don't other than it finds a good home. When I saw the lot I remembered the pic from this thread and the discussion that it was scarce and thought it worth mentioning in case one of the few dedicated readers here was on the lookout for one.

Also curious, and I may be wrong here, but I could swear that the lot description said "circa 1970s" yesterday before my post, and the reason I remember is because I chuckled to myself about it, knowing the discussion in this thread. Now the lot description reads "circa 1980s", which still hedges, but it certainly seems like someone from Hunts is scanning this forum (or a reader alerted them) and bothered to edit the write-up. Kudos to them for that. Too often the AH's don't bother to clarify mistakes pointed out to them, presumably when the original is perceived to be in their favor.

Thanks for the suggestion. Not being in the area, I did not know about the museum and although subconsciously probably presumed there were museums I had never made the effort to research it. Now that I know, I anticipate arranging to stop in when near enough or just planning a deliberate trip for it.

I knew Dwayne years ago - Great stand up guy - equally great photographer and Clemente fan. Used to have some of the stuff sold in the family Auction - haven't been in years, but used to be AWESOME! In a great old firehouse too. Double check about operating hours or by appointment?

PSA calls it a 1971 - I am not sure if the little research I've done on these corroborates that or not - for now going under the assumption PSA is correct.

Awesome Hostos magazine - never seen another.

Welcome Scott - sad to see your master set go.

A little more eye candy for all - will not let PSA touch these as they will have to fold (translate as damage) a flap to fit into their holders!! The 1962 box in my master set is the SUPER RARE 20 piece box that fits without folding into PSA's holder - Registration is horribly off, but only 1962, 20 piece box I have ever seen. Will post eventually. Enjoy.

Howard
I just picked up a 1962 Bazooka 20 piece box at the National.

Rats awsome pick up I saw that at the National its is an impressive addition to your collection Congratulations! There ere a lot of nice Clememte items. I was searching for 1971 Pirate stubs and could not find one in the entire place despite three full days searching. Multiple dealers told me that they attributed this to Clemente collectors. They said anything related to Clemente was highly sought after. I saw one 1969 MLB Pinback but at $500 I couldn't pull the trigger. I saw one Clemente bust bank in poor condition. There was one 1960 World Champion fan missing the tassels. I also saw two pair of sneakers in the original boxes. Both sellers were asking $1400.

Mike, those prices do seem high. Are you talking about the red, white and blue MLB pinback? It does seem to be tough to find, but I don’t think I would’ve paid $500 for it either.

I noticed a lot of high prices too, but there were some items that were reasonably priced. It seems that there are a lot more Clemente collectors than when I first started out, so dealers are starting out high. You have to try to haggle them down to something reasonable.

Yes that"s the one. I wanted it badly but at not at $500. This show also had some awsome Clemente bats on display. Taube had a Momen Clemente bat. I am now tempted to sell off some of my non Pirate/Clemente items to purchase a Clemente gamer.

Mike,

I’ll take the Brooks Robinson box and glove combo when you start that process

Mark I was offered 2K for that item this weekend and passed. I'm sure that was quite a crazy for me to do.

That’s a decent offer for the glove/box. Hopefully you’ll be able to pick up another and be able to sell with the other... I was just kidding a little bit by calling it a Brooks piece (even though Clemente is pictured as well).

Default Wow!

Floyd,

Holy crap - that was a HUGE score!! I own the only other 20 piece Clemente I have ever seen in 30 years - and yours is in MUCH better shape than mine!! Insanely tough box! Who had it? What is it graded?

Mike,

1 - I agree that 2k is an insane number to pass up for that glove and box
2 - If it was mine, I might have passed it up too!

Thought I might make a run, but didn’t think it would go that high.

I sold one a couple of years ago for ~4k! Thankfully have 1 in my collection - or I'd have owned it myself - I thought someone "stole" it.

Hey Howard,

I won the Test Disk. I'm not sure I would have stayed in for much more though, but I thought I had seen one listed on ebay as BIN for a lot more a while back and then it was gone. Was that yours or someone else? (The one I remember I'm pretty sure was already PSA-ed, so perhaps that would result in a premium.)

Also, what else can you tell us about them? There is at least one that is not "progressive"? If so I'd rather have that, but for now this will do. Are the other progressives out there different colors so there is only one of each primary color, or is it not really known how many of each are out there?

And if I want this slabbed I could send it in as is and let PSA handle it? I was a little unsure based on how it was described as being mounted on cardboard backing, as far as whether that was now permanent, or just how Topps was adding a passive backing just to stabilize it?

(and no comments necessary from the gallery about having spent that much $ on something I didn't fully understand at the time, as I am already quite well aware of what I've done!--but when starting to run out of things to buy and having the monthly budget start to stack up, it makes me antsy to spend it on something, even if it's something outside my more comfortable knowledge base...)

Since you asked Howard I’ll let him respond on the specific Clemente questions.

For one I don’t think you overpaid at all and likely got a deal on the test disc; Congrats by the way. In my view they are all “progressive” proof discs since they were unpublished. There are proof discs for Clemente in both ‘67 and ‘68. There’s a variety of color progression on the discs and there are examples that have full color. I don’t believe it’s known how many are out there, but they are scarce.

I don’t believe your Clemente is mounted on anything. When Topps puts the items in their holder they include a white piece of backing board and affix their hologram. If you want to get PSA to slab it all you have to do is remove it from their holder (Topps uses a sticker to seal it).

The listed disc is the 6th one I have ever seen. I have owned 3 of the others. I currently own one. I only know of one that is a final proof (all colors) and it resides in an incredibly advanced collection for a REALLY LONG time. It is very possible there are a few more out there, including a couple of uncut sheets ( I do know of 1 of those too). The discs are DEFINITELY scarce. IMO you got a GREAT deal!! I had listed one of mine on ebay (It was a full yellow version). I believe there was one other listed on ebay a while ago. Interesting question about the number of stages of proof variants. I am going a bit by memory here, but I do not think of the ones I saw any 2 were the same. Anyone else weigh in on this?
PSA only grades these authentic and shouldn't be an issue grading yours as such. The 68's are an entirely other story - I purchased and cut a complete set on a sheet to get what is currently the only Clemente I have ever seen from that set (currently residing in a PSA A holder). Glad to know it was someone in our community that got it! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the well-wishes and guidance fellas. I expect to send it in, so as to be able to register it (despite it being only an "optional" piece and not actually factoring into anything).

It then occurred to me that although it was being talked about, it wasn't actually pictured...so, I text-searched checked the handy #911 catalogue and sure enough, no other appearance in the thread elsewhere either, so, since it arrived, here you go:
