Default Willie Mays "The Catch" Type 1 Photo

I'm confused as always . . . . .

"The Catch" was made by Mays on September 29, 1954 during game 1 of the WS. Not in July vs. The Phillies.

You know.. I looked at that listing pop up on highest prices type 1 searches many times and never opened up and looked at back/noticed. Good CATCH Steve.

Item has been pulled. PSA has already contacted the seller and original submitter and is having the item sent back to their office to be corrected.

Unlike Say Hey, balls do get drop in the real world.

Well. I am guessing made more than one catch in centerfield in the Polo Grounds. LOL

Not like Mays’ catch was the most famous catch in the history of the game
or anything. Oof.

PSA calls this Jackie Robinson with the Montreal Royals a Type 1 from "1964" not 1946. You'd think for 25k you'd get PSA to fix the error.

Made me think . . . .how many type 1 photos of The Catch are out there and what would they command today at auction? My searches of Heritage and a few other places turned up no more than 3-5.

Anyone has one for sale or better yet a trade drop me a line.

Here is another “mechanical error” by PSA photo authenticators. This time it is an NFL oops.

Although this is indeed a type 1 captured by legendary, long-time Packers’ team photog Vernon Biever; it does not depict Super Bowl II in Miami as it reads on the flip. The image shows Green Bay wearing their home green jerseys at Lambeau, not their road whites as they wore at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Also, the opposing team is the Bears, not the Raiders. It looks like this regular season photo was used for press in the lead up to the championship game. The text on back reads that Jim Grabowski (pictured) was not expected to be available for the SB. He didn’t actually play in the big game. Adding to the confusion, the dated, use stamp is the exact date of the SB. Looks to me like PSA dropped the ball, then tripped over their own feet and fell smack on their face for a five yard loss. There are more skilled experts here on Net54, than the paid pros at the TPGs. I know that there is some overlap.

I think PSA does a lot of things correctly but sometimes when they make an error, it really stands out. Given their huge volume, it is understandable that some things may slip by. We all make mistakes…they happen. We all just have to try to do better going forward.

Remember - like the Willie Mays photo above which depicts A catch and not THE catch; PSA is just A Third Party Authenticator, not THE Third Party Authenticator.
