Once again, the world's most impressive baseball memorabilia auction was a gathering ground for the hobby's premiere collectors. REA brings out the
competitive fire inside all of us. It was truly a fun event.

Unfortunately, we were not not very lucky last evening. We only won one lot, despite aggressively bidding on 16 lots. We were surprised that the Tattoo Orbit advertising piece doubled an guesstimate that Rob shared with us, and truly stunned by the $18,000 price tag for the Buffalo Fed League pennant. To the best of our knowledge that is 6x more than a Fed League
pennant had ever sold for.

Looking forward to hearing who won what.

I thought, once again, that some stuff went cheap like the t208s and some was in outerspace like the Boston store Ruth and the Drum Johnson both in the $30k range.

I thought the T210 Jackson @ $95,000 and T210 Stengel @ $20,000 were about right but I was stunned by the $18,000 for the 1914 Buffalo Federal League pennant . I thought my early bid on that item was excessive -boy was I wrong !

I hope a board member picked up the Jimmy Collins cabinet. I would've loved to have picked up that lot and the Fatima premium.

I agree with you Bill. I thought the SGC 40 Plank at $50,000 w/o the BP went a little cheap. Just my opinion.

I only track T202s and I definitely noticed a softer market in T202 singles than in past auctions. REA normally beats the "book" price by a wide margin, but that wasn't the case this time around. Did anybody notice that trend on any other of the popular sets?

The Plow's Candy Collins was the only thing I really wanted and it went a few thousand more then I wanted to go. I couldn't justify paying the condition premium.

Guys, I went ahead and merged the two "REA pickup threads" into one thread for us.....

For myself, I won three things either alone or with teams. Both e103 lots will be headed my way and I also won a large stake in the massive e93 lot - the one with 81 cards, 44 HOFers and 5 Wagners....

Beautiful card and a great start M's Fan. I empathize with your "craziness." I'm pleased to say that this OJ Robinson was the last card I needed to complete the goal of having one pose of each HOFer. I'd say it took me about 8 years. Hopefully I'll be able to resist the temptation of setting another goal.

I hope my invoice is wrong , it states $ 1000.00 shipping for 2 small items I won. MUst be a mistake.

I know Rob gave fair warning about the possibility of the auction closing anytime after 11PM EST but bids were coming in at 100 every 18 to 20 minutes for a few hours before the Rob shut it down. And if you look at the Recent Bids you see several big ticket items being in play several minutes prior to it closing. I know the guy has to sleep but seemed premature based on what I could see. Only 5 minutes had passed without a bid.

Standard practice for most houses is to automatically put a huge # on everyone's invoice then go back and make it the correct amount on a person by person basis. It will be fixed (unless what you won was Obama's Jeep).

The statement about the Buffalo Pennant selling for 6 X more than a past Federal League Pennant had sold for is completely wrong. Below is a link to a Baltimore Terrapins that previously sold for over $13,750. Others have sold for between 5 -10K as well.

Still an amazing price realized for the Buffalo piece...

I agree. I think the problem is that the extended bidding session (12 hours) has normally ended around 3:45 am EST for the past few years, so bidders are not really getting serious now until around 2:30 am or so, knowing that Rob will shut it down at the 3:45 or so time. I won three lots last night and on two of them I didn't put my second bid in until about 3:22 am, knowing that I was safe. When one of the lots got into a bidding war at that time, I was worried that the auction would close down without any notice at around 3:45. My last bid was placed about 10 seconds after the other guy at around 3:42 am and I was happy to have won it.

Thank goodness someone else got a $1000 S/H charge. I saw this on my invoice after I won one lot last night, and I was going to have a meltdown if this was the charge. (I didn't win the Jeep either. )

Won the three items I really wanted plus one of the '53 Topps artwork cards. Also partnered successfully on a lot which I am not at liberty to divulge yet. In general I was pleasantly surprised that the bidding, at least on my cards, wasn't as ferocious as I feared it might be. The M110 Cobb, une pièce de résistance without the resistance, just the way I like 'em, is the same card for which I battled and lost two years ago and which came a whole lot cheaper this time. Likewise I wondered why an N173, with Roger Connor on it no less, had zero activity in OT. Too much nice stuff in one auction? Too many strapped collectors in this economy? Don't know but for some of us, me included, last night at REA was Fat City.

I know a lot of folks comment that REA can be a relatively expensive place to buy - and there are certainly plenty of lots that demonstrate that.

But did anyone note any "bargains" in REA this time?

From my perspective, the lots added at the end (they were not in the print catalog) were fertile hunting ground. This included some nice mid-grade Dockmans. My theory is that these got overlooked by bidders (the Dockmans that were illustrated in the catalog got strong prices - the Wagner throwing, SGC 40, went well over VCP). A late consignor put in a horde of E-cards...including several lots of Dockmans. I know Dockmans are not "rare" cards, but many of these late-added lots went for quite a bit under VCP. A couple of these lots would have been great dealer break lots.

Also (on the subject of the flip), I bought the high grade '39 Moe Berg for $500+juice this time - this is the exact card that REA sold one year ago for $700+juice (a fact that was noted in the write-up).

Also thought the 1891 Conly Studio cabinets went cheap.

Wow Jeff. I didn't notice that that Ruth had gone for that much. You're right. It seems crazy even considering that the card appears from the scan to be a great candidate for a grade bump.

Amazing how thw the words "cheap" and "deal" are used for single cards that cost more than my first house! Don't let the media know about the prices realized in this auction or the "recession" will be officially over. I never new there were so many multi-millionaires in this hobby, I can't even afford the buyer's premium on 99% of these items.

Its funny, before this auction I admired the T205's, but never felt compelled to buy one.

But for some reason this card came a callin'... Now I'm thinking a T205 HOF set might be in order.

Thanks! My first T205 is a bit of a tough act to follow. I plan on being in the SGC 40-60 range from here on out in this set.
