Default February Pick-Ups...

I know it's not hi-grade, but I am pretty excited. I am going for low/mid/ex 54 Topps set, now only need 7 more that aren't commons, they just happen to be big ones... Knocked one off late last night, I now have both Teds -

What's everyone else getting?

Default 1960 Topps Tattoo

I have been searching for this card for over a year. Finally found it and at a great price. Could not be happier. And, this was the last card I needed to complete my run of Topps Mantle Cards (minus the rarer test issues and one of the 52 Topps variations). Nice to finally check this off the list.

Hi Pawpaw,

The tattoos were spelled "tattoo" in 1960 and "tatoo" in 1964. This is a 1960 issue. Topps produced five total for Mantle:
1. 1960 Topps Tattoo Mantle Portrait (pictured);
2. 1960 Topps Tattoo Mantle Auto-ball (just a ball with a facsimile signature);
3. 1964 Topps Tatoo Mantle Yellow Band;
4. 1964 Topps Tatoo Mantle Red Triangle (red packaging); and
5. 1964 Topps Tatoo Mantle Red Triangle (yellow packaging).

I was fortunate and was able to grab this off of Clean Sweep Auction's latest auction. I have only seen one on eBay in the last year and really wanted this to round out my set.

Great cards, guys. Jason I really like the Frank Robinson. The '73 Topps set seems to be mentioned often in discussions of least favorite sets, yet I love it. And it's amazing to me how many discussions of all-time greats tend to overlook Frank Robinson. Nearly 600 HRs, MVPs in both leagues, 57 hits shy of 3,000. There's no reason for it. He should be up there with Aaron, Mays, Mantle et all.

The 73 F Robby is one of my favorite cards. I remember pulling it from a pack
in 1973 with snow on the ground, after my mom brought home a pack from the grocery store.

I called my friend who lived down the road to tell him baseball cards were in the stores.

He 1 upped me later in the week, when a family friend who owned a gas station and had access to wholesale markers got him either a vending box or a wax box. Either way, he had fun at age 10 busting that whole box.

Default Tattoos and Tatoos

So why did they change it back and forth over time, intentional or careless mistake ?

No clue. Assuming it was a careless mistake?

Great recall. Reminded me of a box experience of my own. My father once owned a small tobacco/magazine store and I used to help him out once in a while after getting out of the service back in the 60's. One day, I found him standing in the stockroom, scratching his head looking at two large boxes that had been hidding in a corner. They were waxboxes of 1968 Topps cards left over from the year before. He was sure his distributor wouldn't take them back for credit because they were over a year old. I can still picture him, chomping on his cigar and waving at the boxes as he told me take them out back and toss them into a dumpster. Meant nothing to me then - I had long since lost all interest in cards. But, now I have to wonder how many HOFers were in all those unopened packs.

Thanks, I overpaid a little, but I figured it looked nice so I had to take it.

I also LOVE this card.

Every time I come here, I learn something new. Or I see something I've never seen before. Bravo, gentlemen.

Those push pulls are amazing.

I really feel like I grew up at the wrong time. All the cool stuff came out before I was born.

Default Topps in the 60s

Bill---the Push Pull set was 1965, and like the 3 Hocus Focus /Magic Photo issues, the Who Am I issue, the Great American Stamp issue, the Scoops issue, and others, it was not limited to baseball. It had 36 subjects, only 3 of which involved baseball

The 60s were the heart of the Golden Era for both issued and unissued Topps test issues, which ended in the early 70s

I guess I'm still on my low grade Mantle kick. I just picked this one up a few days ago at a very reasonable price (at least I thought it was). I just love getting a Mantle from the mailbox when I get home from work!

Thanks,

AndyH

I've been looking for this card for awhile. I "won" it in the Love of the Game auction. BTW... they were great. Super fast shipping.
