That’s a nice one Scott! Sometimes I see modern Clemente cards that I wouldn’t mind owning, but then I remind myself that at some of the prices, I’m better off putting that money towards vintage.

I just picked this program up. It was from a 1967 Charity Testimonial Banquet hosted in Eerie PA. First time I have come across one of these. The honorees were the MLB MVP Clemente and NFL MVP Bart Starr. Pirates manager Harry Walker was in attendance as well as was HOF member Garo Yepremian who had just completed his rookie season that saw him set an NFL record six Field Goals in a single game. Bob Prince was the MC. Each one of them signed this program. I found a photo of Clemente and Starr at the event. If you look at Starr’s left hand he is holding a copy of this program.

Whoops I stand corrected Garo is not in the NFL HOF. How embarrassing for both of us.

Default Great pickup Mike!

I've not seen that one before either. I have to go dig up the stuff I won from the Hunt auction as I think I have the award tray that was given to Clemente and a different program to the event!? If so, would love to discuss a possible trade or purchase if you would consider it?

A nice person I met on Facebook gifted me this magazine it arrived today. Apparently Talk Family Magazine is an African American publication based in Pittsburgh. I didn’t see this one listed in this thread so I thought I would add it.

I'm confused...was Clemente running so fast that he slid far into center field, making Mays quickly leap to avoid a collision??

Haven’t seen one of those offered in many years, why do you think they’re so scarce?

So very hard to say. This pin is early so he might not have been so wanted back then.. Also pirate stadium pins seem to be way harder to find so they just didnt make as many... certain stadium pins are very scarce this is one of them

This piece is not mine but I thought I’d share. I purchased this for the Clemente Museum earlier today. It’s a 1959 Advertising piece for Horne’s Department store in Pittsburgh. This appears to predate the rare Horne’s cards discussed earlier in this thread.

Nice item Mike. I picked one up a few years ago, but rarely see them available.

Do you actively purchase items on behalf the Clemente Museum?

Default Rare Roberto Clemente find take 2 - another 1 of a kind!

Twice in a lifetime!?

Some of us chase after the rare and obscure. I am definitely one of those people. My collection focuses primarily on playing days issues of Roberto Clemente. I especially love pursuing complete as issued boxes – most with known populations that can be counted on a single hand, sometimes a single finger. For 30 years prior to August 2020 at the top of my want list was a complete 1960 Bazooka box with Clemente. You can read the story of that incredible find here: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=286980
Within a half hour of my posting this once in a lifetime find, a board member asked the question: So what’s next?

In short order I responded that a 1962 Jell-O Clemente complete box (for those unaware, the 1962 Jell-O was a test issue of sorts with limited regional distribution and are quite hard to find today – even in cut card form) or 1962 Post Canadian complete box with Clemente could be “next”. I had never seen or heard of the existence of either one. I took the time to enjoy the Bazooka box for a few weeks (literally pinching myself a couple of times while holding it), then started giving real thought to what was theoretically possible. In addition to the ’62 Jell-O and 62 Post Canadian, I added a complete 1961 Post box, complete 1963 Post box and/or complete 1962 Post box with a “blue line” Clemente. I started putting out some feelers for any of the aforementioned. I hadn’t seen nor heard of any of them existing.

Brian Powell reached out and shared a copy of an SCD advertisement by Lew Lipsett from 1985. Lew sold a collection of uncirculated (never had Jell-O in them!) 1962 Jell-O boxes. There was a single example of a number of different players including Clemente. The box existed! Did it still? Where was it? Did someone cut it to try to get a “high grade” single? The hunt was on.
I reached out to a number of people I know who might know its whereabouts. I reached out to a retired Lipsett who did not recall who purchased the box. I checked the grading company population reports. Nothing. I continued checking auctions, Ebay and a number of other sales channels. Nothing. The search paused as I had turned over all the stones I could think to turn over.

About a month ago I was pricing out a group of cards including a 1962 Jell-O Clemente single. I often check the graded population for cards I know to be low population. As I was navigating to the 1962 Jell-O listing in the grading company database, just above it was the “1962 Jell-O complete box” listing. “Just for fun” I clicked on the complete box listing – my eyes popped out of my head when I saw the Clemente listed there!!! It wasn’t there last time I looked! Now to find it……

I frantically started posting on Facebook and Net 54 looking for it. I emailed a number of contacts. Shortly after I posted on Net 54 I received a text from Nicolo (Raulus) with a link to the Clemente box coming up in a major national auction! Oh Crap! Now I need to take down all my posts so as not to bring any more attention to the box than a major national auction invariably will already have! I deleted all my posts and sent follow up emails that I had located the box.

In addition to the 1962 box, the auction also had an uncirculated 1963 Clemente Jell-O box (I already have one – though nowhere near as nice and a different flavor Jell-O (which I didn’t realize till after the auction) and 1962 post Alpha Bits Clemente partial box (the fact it was only partial made it less interesting to me).
When the dust settled (and my pocket was quite a bit lighter), I was the winner of the 1962 box! I received it yesterday. I believe it is a one of a kind and the same box sold by Lipsett in 1985.
Ironically, it was slightly anti-climactic in the shadow of the 30 year search for the 1960 Bazooka box as I had “only” searched for 3 years. Had it been on my radar, I could theoretically have been searching for it longer than the Bazooka box. That said, I feel humbled to have been able to add this incredible, likely 1 of a kind box to my collection!

Anyone happen to have a 1962 Post Canadian complete box (or complete panel) with Clemente….. ?

It is a team issued photo. PSA doesn't grade them but other than the couple I've owned, I don't recall seeing them around.

Hi Howard, Thank you so much for posting this information & Docpatlv asking about it . Been trying to find more info about this team issue card. I assume this is also a 1971 issue. Wonder why PSA stopped grading it. Oh well. Thanks again.

TJ, Those with the white box are 1971 team issued Sunday photos. They were distributed to fans for autograph sessions conducted at Three Rivers Stadium prior to Sunday day games. There is not a definitive checklist. The autographed ones I have in my collection are as follows. I do not have a signed Clemente portrait version*. I hope this helps.

Meant to get this up here yesterday. Happy belated Birthday to the amazing Vera Clemente

This original photo of the amazing Clemente power couple came to me from Puerto Rico and only has one publication stamp from "Bohemia Libre". I am in the middle of my research determining if it was from the Cuban or competing Venezuelan issued magazine. Either way it's a crystal clear piece and I feel beyond blessed to have this in my collection.img014.jpg

Have this magazine available. Only the cover + one page are for sale, but they are tough to come by.

PM if interested.

Thanks,
Eric

Default Been a while but......got something worth sharing!

So, some of you may remember a few years ago when my 30 year search for a 1960 Bazooka complete box with Clemente ended with my successful acquisition of one........ Someone at the time asked "so what's next". In response I developed a list of theoretical possibilities: Items that could exist that I had never seen or heard of. It was a short list:

1962 Jell-O complete box
1961 Post Cereal complete box
1963 Post cereal complete box
1962 Post Canadian complete panel and/or box

Since then I acquired (and pretty sure shared here) the only known example of a 1962 Jell-O complete box. I also found 1 that wasn't on the list - a one of a kind 1972 Topps protoype Clemente card.

Well, I was recently lucky enough to acquire the only example of a 1961 Post cereal box with Clemente on it!!!!! So Psyched! Bonus that it is so clean and vibrant!

Now, anyone have or know the wherabouts of a 1963 Post complete box with Clemente or a 1962 Post Canadian panel or box with Clemente?

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.
