Kept this ‘56 Mantle from a big vintage collection I sold years ago. Goes well with the signed and graded Mantle baseball.

I picked up a 1960 Venezuelan Mantle Sticker. It is approximately 2 inches by 3-1/8 inches These are apparently pretty rare.

https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...ker-album-set/

But I have a problem with it. It has a tear at the top that is about 1.5 cm long. The tear occurred while in transit. The seller simply put the sticker in a penny sleeve, put that in a top loader, and then put that in a 9-by-12 mailer. It was able to freely move about within the mailer. Consequently, the penny sleeve arrived out of the top loader and the sticker out of the penny sleeve. And it was torn which it wasn't previously.

I would like to get a partial refund from the seller due to his negligent packaging and subsequent damage. The question is, how much should I push for? I suppose that would depend on how much the value is after the tear. That would be subtracted from what I paid to determine the refund. So, the question is, how much would this be worth with the tear?

Mike, I would estimate you should be refunded 40 - 50% of the purchase price. The tear is on his hat, which is a key place on the image. On the bottom, it might be more noticeable, but it is on Mickey's head---NOT GOOD!

I am very sorry. This must be very upsetting. --- Brian Powell

Thanks for the input. I would be happy with around 30%. But, I'll start with your estimates and if need be let him work me back to 30%. I haven't heard back from the seller yet (I contacted him yesterday morning before I got your input). But I'll give him a few more days.

Very cool pickup Mike. Sucks about the tear. You would think a high dollar item would be shipped properly.

Here is a Dee Love to cheer you up

Picked this one up recently. 55 pc back.

Newest addition. Got a decent deal, couldn't pass up the centering and color even with the issues.

Oh, yeah, that REALLY cheers me up, Ben. Showing not just one, but TWO items still on my want list.

If you want to get rid of the Exhibit Post Card back since they're so large and ugly and smelly and take up a lot of room, etc., I know a great place for it.

That does have great centering and color. But what is with the hole punch? Why would someone do that? To store it in a binder before penny sleeves were available? To be able to walk around with a ring of cards?

Kids did it to put on the wall. I know it's more common to see tack holes with discoloration, but some preferred a hole punch.

Great pickups everyone. Mike, so sorry to see what happened to that phenomenal piece. My personal opinion is that condition is basically irrelevant for items like that, but still should have been handled appropriately. I do bubble wrap and cardboard for anything of value when it goes through the mail. It’s a shame.

Ben, great cards as well. Do you have the Exhibit in hand yet and have you had an opportunity to compare it with another? Probably just the picture but color seems a little off.

As for the hole punched card, I love it. I’ve got to do that to mine so I can flip through them easier.

Hey Chris, I actually just had it slabbed and it is still at PSA. Here is a better image scan from them. I will try to remember to take a pic of it next to my other 55 Exhibit PC back - Mutoscope.
Like you mentioned to Mike, I don't really care what the condition is, I am just happy to have snagged one

Default Mantle Exhibit PC back

Ben:

Congrats on the Mantle PC back. As you know I am not into grading. But how is that only a 2?? Looks real good to me.

But I guess I should not be surprised. When I recently got the four 61 Topps Dice Cards I picked up ( Mantle, Mays, Musial and Richardson) graded, I was expecting to be disappointed and figured I'd get a 3 or 4 on them because I thought they looked like a 5 or 6.

Of course the Mantle came back 2.5. The one good thing is it was the highest graded, so in that respect it was good, but just like your Exhibit PC it sure looks much better than the assigned grade.

Just my old man's grading rant! I know it is nothing new for you graded collectors.

Fred,

For any of my Mantle stuff I slab for protection or I buy cheap examples already slabbed. I’m definitely not in it for grades. I think most of my Mantle base cards are 1’s or 2’s. I do have a bunch of 80’s 10’s in my pc, but most of those I acquired or slabbed for minimal $. To each there own though

In the case of this PC back, I think it probably could have gotten a 3 or 2.5 but I am fine with the assigned number. It does have a noticeable crease that guarantees a low grade. It isn’t that noticeable in a scan.

I am ready to find a raw dice game Mick like you did next! Haha

Nice piece Ben! Figured the other was just a bad scan but no doubt about it after seeing the photo! As an aside, the only high grade cards I have are the rare cards where I couldn’t wait and hope a 1 popped up

Very cool pickup Mike! Congrats.
Now you need to collect variations with different numbers of matches used from the book. Haha

Thanks Ben. As to your suggestion, very interesting idea. Although I may be crazy, I haven't reached that level ... yet.

But speaking of crazy, the other day I was going through my stuff looking for something and I found a package with auction winnings from Dec. 2021 and found the following Type I photos. They're not in the best of shape, but pretty neat anyway.

Congrats on the sale. I have that one in a PSA 8. Wondering what it would go for as I see the lower grade ones are bringing a nice chunk of change. Cheers.

With oddball pieces like this, it’s just a question of who’s in the market, and how much they’re willing to pay. Demand for oddball pieces tends to be thin, but all it takes is a few motivated bidders at auction for the price to go to the moon. With your PSA 8, since it’s the highest graded, and the next one is not even close, there’s the potential for a few guys to go nuts on a set registry play.

At the same time, it’s so difficult to find these in any grade that you often get some compression in the market, with even low grades pieces selling for museum prices. Unlike with mainline pieces, where a pop 1 PSA 8, none higher might sell for 10x or 100x of a PSA 2, with the oddball stuff, it could go for 2x or it could go for 100x. Just need the right buyers to be motivated enough to pay that much for it.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if you could easily get $10-20k on a bad day, and probably approach 6 figures on a really good day.

I always thought that in order for this item to receive a numerical grade that it has to have the white borders on all sides. I've seen a few with no borders at all receive numerical grades. Just no consistency.

A couple of pick-ups:

The Holiday Inn coaster with Mick batting left-handed

Mantle 1960s Holiday Inn Coaster Batting Left Handed 1 Front.jpg

The following is listed by KeyMan Collectibles as a 1965 Manny Baseball Land photo. It is slightly different from the other similar Manny Baseball Land photo not sold in the 1961 Yankees set. This one is 8-1/2" by 11". The cropping of the photo is different also.

I’m sure my fellow Mick collectors will want to pick up both examples. Well, maybe Chris and Mike will
The with “e” seems to be tougher to find.
It took me several months to get my hands on my copy of the card to see what version I have. It was the without "e" version. So of course, I had to look for the with "e" version. It took a few more months to find one that I liked, but finally did. As Ben pointed out, the with "e" version is more scarce that the without "e". I would guess that there are about 10 withouts for every with based on my unscientific observations.

Picked this book up at the National. A lot of oddball Mantle pics. Mostly black and white but great to see rare items like this. Didn't know it was even out there.

Now that this has been taken down off of ebay I assume the seller finalized a deal off ebay for this beauty.

Anyone here lucky enough to have snagged it?

Nice one Mike… And also nice for the 1962 318 variant. Crazy new variants like these are still being discovered.

Thanks Ben.

And I'm glad you've stopped discovering new variants.

A few more recent odd ball pick-ups.

Supposedly a 1954 8"-by-10" photo. At some point in time, someone typed Mantle's name on the front.

Mantle Photo 1954 possible team issue.jpg

An 8"-by-10" photo that is stamped on the back; it is from NBC for Television Audience Promotion for the 1958 World Series.

Mantle Photo 1958 NBC WS.jpg

An 8-1/2"-by-11" magazine from Mexico, Super Hit. It's a special edition commemorating the homerun race of 1961. Maris is on the front cover with 61 "jonrones" and Mick is on the back with his 54 "bambinazos".

Here's a 1956 tv guide pamphlet from Tuesday July 10th I got recently. The all star game is of course the star of the show that day.
Mick in good company.
Look at the names of who hit a home run that day.

Mickey mantle
Willie Mays
Stan Musial
Ted Williams

Unreal.

Hi Fred,

I was lucky enough to get it. I wanted to wait to reply until I actually had it in hand. I've attached a horrible picture with glare and all. It looks much nicer in person. As you know, this is an item I've wanted for quite a while, so I'm ecstatic to finally get a copy.
