Because you never see that one, I was willing to compromise a bit on the condition. It was kind of a missing ink to my All Star run of pennants, so I can look past the stain pretty easily. Would LOVE to see your 1960 American League version, if you can dig it out (and if it's not too much trouble). Not sure if I have ever seen that one! |

I picked this small one up recently. It is the first one I have seen in this format or size (9"). I went for over a year without finding a 1971 Pirates pennant I didn't have. Then in the course of a month I add two to my collection...go figure

Thanks for posting those Jason. That 1960 pair is SO sweet. Love the green felt version. I wonder if anyone else has that rare pairing... Great stuff!
Mike: Nice pickup. That's gotta be a tough one! Here's another I came across that appears to be in great condition and priced reasonably. Not sure if you have this one.... cool version of the Pirate Mascot, and was surprised to see they carried him through the 1971 season... https://www.chairish.com/product/496...s-team-pennant |

Mark,
Have you ever seen a version for 1939? I don’t believe I have. I have WS, but not All Star. That is the Yankees one I am missing. |

Pretty cool Giants vs Dodgers Pennant
Found this one while trolling completed listings and thought of you Rob. Do you have it and/or did you get this one? This was the best picture in the listing.
Sold for $165. Looks like a buy it now.

I wasn't even aware there was a 1939 All Star version. Would love to see an image of that one! Rob and Rob: That Giants/Dodgers one must've sold lightning fast at that price. Was the left side of the pennant ok, condition-wise? That one seems to turn up about once a decade! |

Actually...This might be the better picture. Sorry Rob...I know the feeling. That's why I troll the completed listings every now and then...to torture myself over the things I missed.

Pennant display and storage
So, my pennant collection has outgrown my available wall space. I've posted a few pics below.
I'm looking for creative ideas for pennant display and/or storage. Maybe some sort of rack or shelf system? Like maybe a large pennant binder/shelf that would allow flipping through pennants? Maybe even maximum use of wall space. Also wondering if anyone has a system for keeping critters out (like silverfish), other than constant vigilance. |
#1771
|
||||
|
||||
Great question...My system (or lack thereof) is so inefficient. Trying to find an individual pennant is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Love the flip/file idea. If it doesn't exist, I might have to invent it.

This is what I've done. It's OK but not perfect. It would be better with the binder clips shown in the second photo (you could actually unclip the back one and swing the pennant out for viewing) but after I threaded all the clips through the braided wire and crimped it, I realized the binder clips take up too much room. I had to go back and cut them all with wire cutters. It was a pain. If you do something like this, make sure you screw the brackets into wall studs....all those pennants get heavy.
I just realized, it's kind of hard to see that there is a center bracket. That one has screw eyes to "guide" the cable.

Yes...The lightbulb went off when I saw your set up. If I get rid of all my wife's clothes, I can use all her little clippy hangers...and her closet...to hang all my pennants.
Now the question is...should I run it by her first or just surprise her?

Thanks for the replies.
I wish I had a nice long wall, like Greg's, with no sunlight exposure. I have blackout curtains in my memorabilia room, but nowhere else. That probably won't change. Maybe I can try the partial overlap approach. Part of my problem is that I have pennants mixed with other items. I do like how Rob's system allows you to get a lot of pennants into one relatively small space. I may try something like that. Finally, has anyone figured out a way to store/protect oversized pennants (other than framing)? The top loaders just aren't big enough. |

I dont like over cluttering wall space. At this point I like the rigid top loaders atop a waist high shelf. I can flip thru and rotate what I want on the walls. I dont have the qtys you all have yet

Cleveland pennant
I read through All 178 pages. Took three days. I saw a similar pennant but have not found where I saw it in this forum.

Hi ... this is a great thread, isn’t it? Your Indians pennant is made by Keezer, 1950s or early 60s. Being that it is a 2/3 size pennant and looks faded (?) ... hard to tell in pic ... you have a nice display pennant for a collection but with minimal resale value. Maybe in the ballpark of $20-25 on eBay. A full-size version of this pennant in VG condition would be closer to $75-125.

Cleveland pennant
Greg, many thanks for your reply. That's actually good news to me as I purchased a large lot and this was just added free as an afterthought.
There is also a crumpled Mets one which I might go back and get now that I have pennant fever. Lol |

I really don't display my good pennants. I buy "wall hangers" and/ or Mitchell and Ness higher quality reproductions and I display them like they were meant to be displayed: by tacking them to the wall. No top loader, no frame. I just prefer that look and I hate spending money on pennant accessories.
That said, I'm absolutely paranoid of airborne dirt, sun exposure, and moths. That's why I store my good pennants in a cheap rectangular Tupperware container from Target. You can stack 50 pennants in one of these, seal it from moths and airborne dirt, then shove it under a bed away from sunlight. Sure, you can't display them this way, and finding one when you need it is tough, but it's cheap, easy, and safest for the pennants, so that's what I do. For extra protection from moths, I place an old sock filled with cedar chips, lavender, and rosemary inside each container. This is just as effective as moth balls--but smells much better (and isn't toxic). One word of caution. If you try this method, and/or stack vintage pennants for any length of time, make sure at least every other pennant has some type of protective sleeve on it. I learned the hard way that vintage pennants, particularly those covered in decades of patina, will slowly leach this stuff onto surrounding pennants. Felt dyes will also transfer. Lighter colored pennants are most vulnerable so if you care about that '75 Reds pennant in white, don't stack it anywhere near a navy blue Yankees pennant.

49ers pennant
This just arrived. I'm excited. It is the one 49ers pennant that I really wanted.
With respect to my other post about pennant storage and display, I'm going to try these for oversized pennants. https://www.bcwsupplies.com/12x36-topload-holder Sounds like there is no one system fits all for storage and display. I'm still thinking on it. I do want to keep some pennants on display, but am also concerned about a moth or silverfish sneaking in to do some damage. I think that I have the sunlight concern under control (with two sets of blackout blinds). |

Great pickup Marc... a sweet rare example, and condition appears to be great.
And nice idea on the 36” toploaders. Who ever said they needed to be triangle-shaped? Those should work well... I might try using the same method... Although the 12” width won’t quite work for the really big ones. Last edited by perezfan; 09-04-2018 at 05:15 PM. |

49ers pennant
Thanks guys.
Being an AAFC pennant, I assume that there are Browns and Colts versions out there (maybe some others... LA Dons?)? I'd be curious to see them. Do they all have a player with #77? If so, I'm guessing that the #77 image is somehow related to Red Grange? Maybe an image developed for a Red Grange pennant? I'll let you know how the 12x36 toploaders work when they arrive. |

Marc,
I have had and sold a green and grey Baltimore Colts version and a Los Angeles Dons pennant if I remember correctly. There might be photos in Mike’s book. If I remember correctly, both had 22 for numbers. I think I have also had a New York Yankees that was blue. They were all 3/4 sized. |

AAFC Teams: Colts features player #20. Browns #44. New York Yankees #22. Los Angeles Dons #22.
NFL Teams: Rams #22. Packers #22. Steelers #22. 49ers are only one I know of with #77. Haven't seen any other teams. Quote:

1) I've picked up two other 49ers pennants somewhat recently. The single bar helmet pennant (from Fballguy) usually comes with a clearly non-cursive (later version) or clearly cursive (earlier version) font. This more funky font pennant is much more difficult to find (although it is the only version pictured in Mike Egner's book). I thought that it might be a transition between the two other fonts (i.e., a single year version from the early 1970s), but it is about as stiff as a pennant can get and has no NFL logo. I'd say that it comes from around the 1982 Super Bowl era when all things 49ers were selling like crazy in the Bay Area. Or maybe it comes from the late 1970s when they were terrible and the NFL might have wanted to disown them.
2) I also found that the 12 x 36 toploaders work ok for oversized pennants. See the three Santa Clara pennants below. It took a few minutes to get them in a more or less centered position and they aren't perfectly centered, but I'll be able to hang them (eventually). 3) I also reorganized a bit to get some additional Giants pennants on the wall. I picked up the four round Giants patches (let's call them circle pennants) a few months ago. Same image on the patches as the Giants pennant below them. The image is very similar to one that appears on Tigers programs from 1924, which was the same season Calgary challenged the Montreal Canadiens for the Stanley Cup. The Tigers lost the best-of-three series in two straight by scores of 6-1 and 3-0, with the great Howie Morenz scoring a hat-trick in the opener and another goal in the second.

I don't think that Niners pennant is from the 80's. I don't recall many single bar pennants from even the 70's. Maybe early 70s.
