Default Question about collection buying...

My mom's friend is looking for some information and to possibly sell her husband's collection. I was wondering how people go about putting together a price to offer when they are buying a collection. The only collection I have purchased the person knew the value and offered a price to me. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Look on Ebay for completed auctions and what the cards sold for.

I don't think you'll get an accurate barometer on eBay - not too many legitimate collections up for sale. I would consider finding 3 reputable dealers and soliciting offers from each. Of course they're looking to buy so as to re-sell so expect the offer to be somewhat low but at least you'll have an idea. If the collection consists of quality material, I would consider bringing it to an auction house. I know they are taboo on this site but that's what I'd do. In fact, my instructions to my wife (should something happen to me) is to take my sets to a specific auction house and have them sold individually. I don't want her selling my collection to the local dealer and I don't believe she would list them properly on eBay. Of course if my kids show an interest my preference would be to leave everything to them, but much to my dismay...
