Default 1989 Donruss Baseball Card #600 Variants and a D.K. Bonilla variant too

Gents,

I have found (not sure I am the first one to find this) a 4th variant of the Donruss Checklist card #600.

The first two variants, coming both from wax pack pulls are the Curt/Kurt Schilling variants. These checklists also list the Bonus Cards on the back of the checklist cards.

The next variants, #3 and the newer #4 only come within the factory sets. So, you gotta bust open the cello bricks to find out which one you have.

Both of these variants only have checklists cards to #660, the factory sets did not include the Bonus Cards so they do not show up on the #600 checklist card and the numbering sequence is also adjusted to reflect this as well. Basically all the factory checklists are different in how they depict the card numbers on the front and the back of the cards verses the wax versions of the checklists.

Now the differences between what I am calling variant #3 and #4 are how the backs are printed.

The #3 variant that I have has the back of the checklist flipped upside down from the front of the card as you turn the card over like turning a page in a book. Doing this shows the back side printed upside down.

The black bar is only on the top left side of the card when you have the Donruss logo facing you in an upright position.

The #4 variant has the back of the checklist oriented correctly to follow the front of the card. Again, as you turn the card over like flipping a page in a book.

And the black bar is on the top and bottom right side of the card as you look at it with the Donruss logo facing you in an upright position.

I show this in the following pictures.

There is also an additional variant dealing with the Bobby Bonilla Diamond King card. As you can see from the attached picture there is what looks like a hand made circle in the upper right front of the card. I have seen additional cards such as this one but it was some time ago when I was not into variation chasing.

The Bonilla came from either a wax or cello. Way too long ago to remember from which I pulled it from.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers,

Butch

The 4 checklist varieties are known variations. They have been circulating on lists and e&v discussions for at least a decade.

The Bonilla is new to me.

If you're doing 1989 Donruss still, check out Robin Yount's DK card. There are 4-5 different versions of the black bar/stripe on back (bottom one), some are jagged, hand-done, etc.

Thanks for that info, I will certainly look into them. I recently completed the 90 Donruss run (minus the dot, no dot/asterisk 2-asterisk ones) and figured I’d get the few for the 89 set too. Appreciate the additions to look for.

Regards,

Butch

Here is how COMC lists them.

The Bonilla would probably just be considered a recurring print defect, if it reoccurs.

The one thing I cannot find anywhere is whether the single bar back variation is printed upside down verses correct.

As I mentioned above the one I have, the back is printed upside down from the front of the card.

Thanks,

Butch
