Default a bit O/T .. 1947 Maxwell Hardware (PCL) photo cards

Posted By: leon

I know this is a bit off topic as it's post war but not too far off, especially with another thread or two going that push the boundaries quite a bit. My understanding is these were given away at Maxwell Hardware Stores in 1947, near Oakland/Berkeley area. Does anyone have a roster of this set of photo cards?

Ahhh...so close. You were halfway there.

Sorry Leon...the photo is not something I've seen before. If anyone would know it would be Mark Macrae.

No worries....I changed up the coin. That is my idea of living dangerously or bringing the noise. It's got a lot of family sentimental value but that's a different story. I know Mark would probably know but just figured I would try here first. Plus every now and then Mark will chime in (hi Mark) and, if not, I am sure he and I will talk soon anyway and I can ask. best regards

I personally find it refreshing that these cards appear to have a close up shot of Bermuda grass...the turf connection to baseball is brought to the forefront on this card like none other that I have seen.

Leon -

Sorry I don't have much to add, I looked into that series and could find nothing more than the information the seller gave me. The card you picked up was by far my favorite of the three. Something came up and I forgot to bid on it so that fortunately saved you a little coin. Congrats on the pick up. Just a great card IMHO.

- Dan

There are about 50 different 'basic' images, but numerous variations in the series. They were sold at Maxwell Hardware in Oakland, and at least one other location in the East Bay during 1947 & 1948. Lloyd Hittle hasn't really changed that much in 60 years. Just add a beard to that smiling mug happy.gif

Mark- Hittle doesn't look young on the card. He must be a hundred years old by now? I haven't seen too many cards from this set so I guess they are fairly scarce.

Dan- I wasn't sure which of the 3 on ebay I wanted so I grabbed them all. I ended up picking the Hittle as I too like the pose (especially the grass) on this card. It was half the price of the Sabol though...I think Sabol might have been a bigger name or, it was the last one of the 3 on ebay and another type collector went deeper to try to win it.

best regards and thanks for chiming in, ya'll.
