OT? Satchel Paige pitches for the Kansas City A's

I was watching the local news tonight when they were talking about how they have been in KC for 60 years and so on. Then out of no where they say we have archives of footage from the first broadcast and some other things and then BAM!!

Footage of a 59 yr old Satchel Paige pitching for the Kansas City A's. I thought how cool is that and just wanted to share with you all. He sat in a rocking chair between innings. 59 yrs old and rocking it


The video has no sound but just makes you appreciate it more. What a pioneer he was. Enjoy everybody.

During WWII, my father was a good enough ball player to stay State-side and play on military baseball teams. In 1944, on the day after the All Star Game, he played against Satchel in a war fund raiser in Louisville. Dizzy Dean pitched a couple innings for his team. Dad faced Satchel twice and said he could not even see the ball coming in, much less hit it! What a pitcher he must have been!

A couple of notes about this game:

Warren Spahn was the oldest active player in MLB until Paige took the mound that day.

Carl Yastrzemski doubled off Paige in the first inning. Even given Paige's age that had to be something special for a young Yaz.

Wasn't that the only hit he gave up in 3 innings of work?

Yes it was.

I was lucky to have seen Paige pitch in 1948, 1949 (Indians) and 1951-53 (St Louis Browns). I was a 10 year old kid
when "Satch" made a token appearance in the 1948 World Series. I still remember his windmill windup and remarkably
smooth release that belied the speed of his fast ball.

This 1949 LEAF is his 1st Major League card, it was issued in the Summer of '49. His 1948 pitching record of 6-1 with
an ERA of 2.47 is noted on the back of his card.




His 1949 Bowman card was issued in the Fall of '49.




Paige autographed this magazine photo in the early 1960's.

I was in KC, MO last week for some training and made some time to visit the Negro League Baseball Museum. The had a lot of Satch items including this statue on the Field of Legends.

Statue at Cooperstown and his Browns jersey. I don't know if I'll ever get to Kansas City but I would like to visit that museum if I do. The HOF Negro League exhibit was outstanding.

Yaz was my idle growing up in Mass. I always thought it was so cool that he had the last hit off Paige during his ML carreer.

I think this 1943 Type 1 photo of Satchel is tremendous. I will actually be in KC two weeks from now and will make time for the museum after reading this thread.

As a kid I saw Old Satch pitch with his double loop, windmill windup and remarkably smooth release that belied the speed of his fast ball.

And, over the years I have personally acquired many great BB player's autographs, but this is one of my favorites.
