Can cards be frozen?
Ok, so weird question. But I live in Colorado where it is single digits or below many nights. I worry about not checking the mail when I am expecting cards and having them spend 12+ hours outside. Any thoughts?

They will be just fine. I got a 1952 Ed Mathews in the mail today. It was -2 with a 30mph wind at it was OK.

We used to put boxes of 1981 Donruss in the freezer so as to be able to 'pop' the bubblegum off the card without it sticking to the card.
Didn't hurt those cards a bit. Then again, maybe we'd of been better off just throwing them directly in the trash.

I brought a few boxes of junky ones inside after a few years in the garage/carriage house. I'm sure they've spent some substantial time in single digits. No problems other than them being mid 80's-early 90's cards.
I'm not sure about Kelloggs, or other stuff with a heavy plastic layer. It would be a good idea to give those several hours at room temp before handling them much. |

can't believe there is anyone who collects Eddie Mathews anymore, beside you and me.

I have been in the same situation - mail-ordering cards and being unable to get to the mailbox every day during the winter. Never saw any effect of freezing temperature on the pasteboard, but one day after a snowplow bashed my mailbox, I opened a thin mailer and found an unslabbed '53 Bowman Duke Snider with a serious gash in it. This was in the long-ago days before the interweb, so I had not viewed a scan or pic of the card prior to sending off payment, but since the dealer had described the card as EX/MT, he very graciously offered to refund the sale. Since it had only cost me twelve bucks, I graciously decided to keep the Duke, scarfaced though he was. On a slightly different note, I once heard that putting a crashed hard drive into the freezer overnight will bring it back to life. Tried it, but didn't work.

Hopefully it stays that way for a while. Besides his rookie you can pick up some really nice cards of his super cheap.

I learned about the greats in the mid-to-late 1980's - and you are right, sadly you don't hear much about Mathews anymore. That's a shame. But yes, does not hurt to be able to pickup many of his cards on the cheap.

Many are cold, but few are frozen.

If you leave a Willie Stargell card in the freezer, it becomes a Popsicle.
I'll be here all week.

Along the frozen line- I had several of the 1990's era sets with glossy finishes in old albums. The cards were literally sealed to the old style plastic pages. Someone told me to stick them in the freezer for an hour and they would come free. Worked like a charm, the cards slid right out!

I think that in the interest of science Bob (bobsbbcards) should put his Topps 1968 3D set in a freezer for one week and then report back on any developments after removing them.
Hey Mike, that is a good thing to know Last edited by ALR-bishop; 03-06-2019 at 12:07 PM. |

If my wife finds out that putting cards in the freezer is an option, she might do that and put me in there with them so I don't get lonely.
